Tanith Lee passed away a few days ago.

She wrote a variety of fantasy books but a couple of her well known fairy tale related ones were White as Snow (Snow White mixed with Persephone/Demeter) and Red as Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer (anthology).

This makes me sad! I haven't read a whole lot of her work, but every time I do, I always wonder why don't read her more often.

I've always meant to read more of her fiction as well; I enjoy her short stories when they're in anthologies.

Me three.

I've only read her short stories (to date); her novels have been on Mt TBR for far too long.

Richard (ogresan) | 1 comments Anyone who loves fantasy should have Tanith Lee on their reading lists. She was one of the greats.

Kirsten (ringwraith10) | 42 comments I have so many of her books, but as most of us have mentioned, I haven't read many of them. I think it's very sad, because one article I read said that towards the later part of her life she was having trouble publishing, as she had fallen out of popularity! I've been meaning to make a thread like this in some of my other groups, because not many people in the other groups seem to be familiar with her (even though they are mostly fantasy/sci-fi groups!). So sad.

Also... how weird is it that she died on Christopher Lee's birthday? I mean, they're probably not related, as that's a common enough last name, but still...

She had enough of a following to be able to easily self/indie publish things if she liked. I know she went through a small press to publish one of her backlist books so maybe if she'd had more time, she would have gone that route.

She probably didn't have the energy to do that. Now that she's gone, though, I wouldn't be surprised to see her old publisher publishing some of her latest writing posthumously.

Mary Catelli | 1149 comments I liked Red as Blood, or Tales from the Sisters Grimmer, particularly the title story.

But my favorite was The Dragon Hoard, which took Jason and Medea (which astute souls will note is the fairy tale type "The Girl Helps the Hero Flee") and dumped it into a medievalish fairy tale world, and made it comic.

Wow, I am surprised we have not read any of her books here in this group!
Or have we a long time ago?
I'd heard the name, but ashamed to say have never read anything of hers. White as Snow in particular looks appealing to me as it combines both the Snow White fairy tale and the Demeter/Persephone myth.

I'm so sorry to hear this! I am just now reading her White as Snow, and I LOVE her Red as Blood. It's a regular re-read for me. Biting the Sun and the Birthgrave series are also excellent and unusual.

I hadn't seen it, but that quote is wonderful and fitting to the situation

Lacey Louwagie | 236 comments Biting the Sun is the only Tanith Lee book in my collection. I'm glad to hear that it's good, Michele!

Serena | 19 comments That's a beautiful quote, I agree, do you think it might be in one of her works?

I will always remember that I read her The Wars of Vis / The Wars of Vis (Novels of Vis, #1-2) by Tanith Lee first, I think in high school, I read all her Unicorn series (Black Unicorn/Red Unicorn/Gold Unicorn), a lot of her short stories in anthologies, although I believe she might not have put out a more updated collection of them...?

I also have fond feelings for Piratica: Being a Daring Tale of a Singular Girl's Adventure Upon the High Seas too. I am surprised to only be hearing about this today, truly sorry to have lost her.

I understand she also wrote as Esther Garber...?

I found Space Is Just a Starry Night at the library last night, and it's relatively recent but judging from the reviews here, it's mostly reprints.

I never knew that! fantasticfiction.co.uk confirms it, and they're usually reliable.
