Cozy Mysteries discussion

I've been reading Elisabeth George, and notice she is an American author writing about England. One of my favourite writers is Ngaio Marsh, a New Zealander who also sets her stories in the English country side. However some of my favourite series seem to use regions of the US almost as a character, I'm thinking of Susan Witting Albert's herbal mysteries, Susan Conant's Cambridge and of course Lillian Jackson Braun's Cat who - hundreds of miles from anywhere.
I grew up in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia and identified more strongly with Agatha Christie's English village than with outsider's views of the goldfield's town. What kind of settings do other readers enjoy? And does that affect the way you view your real life environment?

Like the authors you mentioned, I love a mystery set in the English countryside. I would happily consider living in a country village and do live in the country in a house that, at least from the front, could be situated near York. I would love to be able to write in a faraway setting, but find my imagination won't let me. I must see where I am so what I write is set in Santa Cruz, California, where I live.

I enjoy a setting that is different from home. I like to escape. I like visiting new places. I also like coming back to those new places over and over. I guess I am strange that way. I like to visit new places over and over again. I guess you can see why my poor husband feels I frequently don't make sense. HAHAHA

I enjoy reading about different settings, but when I write, it's always in familiar territory.

I don't seek out certain settings. I enjoy small american towns and also foreign. Haven't run into a theme setting I haven't liked yet for a mystery.

I just had a great time investigating a setting. The Big Foot Museum in Felton, CA. is, for some reason, well known. I've lived less than twelve miles from it for years and have never stopped to see inside. This past Thursday I went by because I want to use it as the setting of a scene in the book I'm working on. What a hoot! It's tiny and stuffy inside, has cheesy displays, and was absolutely fascinating.

I chose Los Angeles for the setting in most of my books simply because it's so big and an easy place in which to lose yourself. Sometimes characters can take vacations or travel for other reasons, and that's when they (and the author) get a break from what's familiar to them.

Depending on the genre, small town, big cities, over seas, then the paranormal locations(?)
