I've only read the July Selections and Place Your July Selections Here threads as I was late and didn't have much time. Therefore did not see your comments about no longer counting but purposely didn't change anything by voting for the most popular book anyway.

Oh, several are still counting, Mandy, as they had ties or real close votes. I am glad to you here as the more lists we have the more potential good reads we can explore, and again, there were some close races for a few people.

Kimberly, since I have officially stopped counting my votes for my July PIFM, I will count your vote as the 1st vote for my August PIFM since I basically just rehash the list from month to month with the current winning title deleted, the remaining #'s renumbered and a new book added for #10.

Kirsten, reading about the Adams through their letters is a fascinating glimpse of their relationships and the times. I've read another book but bet this is as good. I had to read THe Red Badge of Courage in school and hated it like I hated most assigned books. I should reread it as an adult, but find I can't assign it to somebody else ;)

Kirsten, I absolutely agree with Perri. I got to visit the house where John and Abigail lived in Quincy, MA, and also have learned a lot about them from other sources. Their story is great. I slogged thru Red Badge in school, but also agree it might be better now that I am old.

Coronado High School in Scottsdale, AZ. only had ONE assigned read that I can recall: The Scottish Play.

We read "The House of The Seven Gables" by Hawthorne. You are right, assigned books aren't fun. I am now tempted to reread it as an adult.

I don't remember my kids having assigned reading in Elem school. So glad they've gotten away from that. It's a great way to turn a kid off reading. :P
