Reading for the first time. First impression is positive -- very traditional origin story, (ie orphan, destiny, sword, world in the balance) and so on. I'm about 200 pages in, and surprised there aren't any female characters yet....
First time reading it for me and so far, I'm having a hard time NOT thinking of the LOTR comparisons. Reading reviews before reading the actual book is something I keep telling myself not to do, but I tend to end up doing it anyways and sometimes it ruins the entire reading experience. It's not as drastic yet with this one, but I noticed I'm not very objective anymore. Meh.
I didn't read the reviews until I was maybe 1/4 or 1/3 into the story and I HAD to see that others saw the comparisons--I could not believe there were so many parallels. I'm told the other two books in the series are more independent from Tolkien's influence.
I just started reading this one a few days ago, and I'm about 14% of the way through the book. so far I think I'm s little bored with it. It seems to move very slowly. I'm listening to it in audio, which is pretty good.
I also see a lot of comparisons to the LOTR. I don't think that it bothers me enough to stop reading it though.
I'm about half way through my first time reading and I made the same mistake of reading the reviews before I read the book. I'll get through it, but so far is just... ok.
I'm just over 100 pages in and I must say, I really enjoy it so far. It started off right away intriguing me, unlike a few I've read later that drone on for over 100 pages before anything remotely exciting happens. I'm really enjoying it, and can't wait to keep reading!
