Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I decided to read The Divergent series for weeks 32, 33, and 34. I've heard great things about the series and the movies, so I decided this would be the perfect time to read them. I plan to finally watch the first and second movie after I've finished them.

I finished Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth this morning. I'll be honest, I don't understand the hype with this one. For a dystopian novel, this was pretty boring. There wasn't much build up to the end, so the entire story was pretty flat. I enjoyed the relationship between Tris and Four, but even that I felt was a bit shallow. All this being said, it was not a bad book, and in some ways I am looking forward to finishing off the series.

I preferred the 1st, so if you find it disappointing, I hope you won't be too much bored by the 2nd. I enjoyed a lot the 1st movie :)

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments I really liked Divergent, but I was disappointed for the other two ; however I know of someone who enjoyed more the third one, I hope you do too (I didn't)

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments Thanks, ladies. So far book 2 is pretty decent, but I'm a little leery of how the story is developing. We'll see where it goes though. I'm committed to these. haha

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments Hmm ... this trilogy was my choice for this week's challenge. Maybe I'll look for something else.

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 319 comments I tried to read this one with my daughter. We had just seen the movie and wanted to try out the series.
There was just too much violence involving kids for me. My daughter is twelve, so that may have been part of it, bit we did not finish the book.
We did watch the second movie and are looking forward to the next one.

Yes, Divergent series is heavy on violence and deaths. I think it's usual in dystopias, when there are fights/survival involved. I find The Giver and P.O.W.ER nicer for young readers.

Silvia Turcios | 304 comments Maybe I don't remember very well, but I have the idea that they kill babies in The Giver...

Jody (jodybell) | 531 comments I think I remember the same in The Giver, Silvia.

Yes, there are some deaths in The Giver, it's a dystopia, not an utopia ;)
I don't think a medical death is "violent", it's very different from violence in fights.

Angelica Nyqvist | 1 comments I love this serie, on of my faves. Love how the 3d books takes a subject that is well talked about today and thinks about what the worst scenario possible due to that could be. I love that Tris does not need to be saved, not a freaking princess. And still she shows humanity and weekness. 3d book the best, followed by the 1st. I do love these books, alot.

I disagree - killing innocent children who have no means to defend themselves is, to me, extremely violent. But that's just my opinion. :)

Sophie (sawphie) I agree Jody, it is violent, but the way it is presented in The Giver is maybe easier to read with a twelve-year old than physical violence like in Divergent.

Krysta (booksaremyfavthing) | 115 comments I'm reading this for my trilogy as well. I only started last night so I'm not far enough in to know whether I like it or not. I'll update once I finish.

I love Tris' character. The violence is disturbing but I'm glad she's equipped to deal with it. I'm usually not a fan of YA books, but this series is changing my mind.

goldberry (missgoldberry) | 17 comments I agree - I also found this book over-hyped. I really like dystopian books but this one wasn't for me. I don't plan to read other books in this trilogy but I think movies are entertaining enough.
Have you finished others books in the trilogy?

Goldberry > Divergent is the best in the trilogy from my point of view. In the 2nd, there is a lot of melodrama which can be annoying for many readers. The 3rd could have be lots of interesting things but went to the safe road, so it's just average (and weird from a scientific point of view).

Maple (maplerie) | 307 comments I haven't been able to bring myself around to see the movies yet. I still feel a bit of anger at the books. I know there are moments of the series that are truly beautiful, but I can't get past how Roth destroyed her characters between the books. They changed so much between books that it was like she was writing a completely different character.
