Holly Leigher (moonshiner) Thanks, Dustin. :)

I finished The Luminaries and also diverted from my list and read Ariel: The Restored Edition, The Middle Stories, and In the Woods. Not too shabby.

Kirstine (kirse) | 43 comments Oh, you've read The Luminaries! How was it? It's been standing unread on my shelf for about a year now and I feel a little bad about it. It also seems to be one of those books where no one agrees on whether it's good or bad.

Oh, man. The Luminaries is a tough one. I did not like it, but I have to admit that Eleanor Catton is a highly competent, creative writer. It was just so repetitive and absolutely did not need to be almost 900 pages. Her structure is really interesting, and like I said in my review, if you're into astrology, you'd probably get a big kick out of it. If not (I am not), probably not.

Kirstine (kirse) | 43 comments Oh no! Haha, I'm so glad I bought it now. No, I'll give it a go someday, maybe I'm lucky and I'll like it. Thanks for being honest! Hope you fare better with the other books you're reading/have read.

Dustin | 84 comments Thank you for your feedback, Holly, much appreciated. I am sorry that it didn't do a whole lot for you, though....:(

I'm curious about The Luminaries now..

Dustin | 84 comments As it turns out, Catton's tome was already on my TBR, but I'm so glad I checked out its synopsis, because this sounds promising. So many mixed reviews, too! This seems to be a book that you either love or hate. Not much middle ground. Holly- without any spoilers, in what ways is astrology incorporated into it?

Each character represents an astrological sign, and each character's actions are determined by the moon. Or the alignment of the planets. Or something. I don't get astrology, haha. The book's structure (long first half, shorter second half, even shorter third half, etc) represents the phases of the moon.
