Jana This is the second book I have read about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. I have not seen the movie. It is definitely interesting the mental states she goes through in this book. I liked this taste of the experience of the earlier days on the trail.

Guy | 37 comments This is my choice as well. Also have not seen the movie. I'm originally from the East and have read books about the Appalachian Trail but not the Pacific Crest Trail.

Chelle_Rydz (chellerydz) Wild From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed I am almost finished with this one. It is not what I expected, and also exactly what I expected. I LOVE A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson. I read it (twice) last year and it's what made me start hiking again after many years. Wild also put me in the mood for a hike, but it is also much more than that. I plan on seeing the movie as soon as I am done.
*****SPOILERS****I did not expect this to be so much about her mother's death from cancer. My dad died a few years ago from cancer so these parts of the book are really hard for me. I'm still dealing with my lose so I could relate to all of her emotions regarding her mom's death and her family falling apart.
I'll add more after I am done.

Erica | 214 comments I read this awhile ago and had a hard time with the cancer parts too (my first love died of cancer in our 20's and it's always a sensitive subject for me). And then I completely forgot about that part when I decided to watch the movie a couple days ago…

Chelle_Rydz (chellerydz) I finished the book. I enjoyed it. It blended life and the trail well. It has motivated me to try a solo hiking trip (as much as A Walk in the Woods did; but for different reasons). I will watch the movie tonight.
I'm also now listening to her book, Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar

One additional note. (this is not about the book as much as about my own thoughts, experiences, and biases). She mentions near the end of the book that she wondered about how well she was treated on the trail; how nothing bad happened to her, and that she received so much trail magic. I do wonder too; if she had been older, and not so pretty and blonde, how different the experience might have been.
