This is the story of an English teacher in her first job in an inner city school. It is an epistolary novel (I didn't know that word, but it means "a novel written in a series of documents") -- in this case that means notes she exchanges with one of her fellow teachers, letters she writes to a good friend, memos from the administration at the school, and notes from her students. This school is hopelessly under-supplied, the administration issues directives that can't possibly be fulfilled, and the students have situations at home that break your heart. But it is a story about hope and determination and in the end -- who learns more -- the teacher or the students? I really enjoyed this book.
I am currently reading (and loving) this one. I was planning to use it for "set in a high school", but then discovered it was published the year I was born, so I could use it for that one too (yep, I'm out of order). Hadn't thought about it for Antonyms. Hmmm....
I just finished this one over the weekend and I agree with you Kirin. I did enjoy the book and thought there were some funny parts but I can't say that I absolutely loved it. It is a shame to learn how bad things can be in schools like that. Thank goodness for teachers like her!
I really enjoyed this book.
