From the extract that I have read, a boy - named Danny - attends his a significant football game against his local rival; during this, however, Danny's father does not attend even though it was previously established that he would. As a result of this, Danny blames his father's girlfriend (Helen) and later describes how much he hates her - even though this is later juxtaposed by the fact that he does like some aspects of her, such as her voice, the ways she moves and her perfume.

YA? Middle grade? Adult? How long ago did you see the extract, and where? Is this American football? Contemporary setting?
He is in his early teens; I read the extract several months ago in a test; soccer; and set in a relatively contemporary setting, I.E. 2000-2015

High on a Cliff by Colin Shindler?
