Harepaw padded into the apprentice den, plotting her next prank. Honeystar was too old and confused to get a good reaction out of. Maybe Iceshade. No.. she had already played too many of them on him. Maybe another apprentice? She hadn't done that in a while. Who would she do it to? She sat down in her nest, pondering.
A sneeze erupted from Nutpaw's nose as he slept, curled tightly in his nest, but it sent him up onto his paws with a startled expression, at first confused over what had woken him up. His eyes fell on Harepaw, and he narrowed his eyes, suspicious, "What did you do?"
Harepaw smiled. Perfect. "Nothing... Yet." She said, laughing. She thought for a moment. This was perfect. She wouldn't do anything, but he would go paranoid about being pranked. Once he was calm again, maybe she would prank him. Her whiskers quivered happily.
As ever on edge, Nutpaw stared at her, sure that the mischievous she-cat had done something to startle him from his sleep. "What did you do?" he demanded, intending to get to the truth that he so believed was there.
"Nothing." Harepaw said. She giggled. "Just watch your back for the next few days." She teased.
Nutpaw stared at her, hesitant - she must have done something. Taking her literally, he twisted to check his back, but only found small clumps of moss stuck to his fur. "Go bother someone else," he glumly mumbled, curling back up.
"Why should I?" Harepaw asked. She padded over to his nest and sat down beside it. She prodded him with a paw.
Nutpaw hissed as he felt her paw, and swatted at her paw back, "Go away and bother another cat. My littermates must be awake - they can put up with you," he mewed.
"And you can't?" Harepaw asked, taunting him. She purred. "How about I make you a deal. You don't tell anyone about my pranks and I wont mess with you. No one ever knows it's me beside you, so my secret would be kept safe."
Nutpaw opened one eye to gaze at her, listening to her 'deal', and considered it. "You will not annoy me any more?" he queried, keen to not be so wound up in his only safe place: his nest.
"Yeah, but you will get it if you tell anyone. I mean anyone." Harepaw said. She gave Nut paw a menacing smile. She padded backwards toward her nest.
Nutpaw hesitated, weighing up what was better: keeping her secret and not being wound up, or betraying her secret and being wound up. It was an easy choice. "Very well," he agreed reluctantly.
Harepaw smiled. "Good." She said. She climbed into her nest without taking eyes off Nutpaw. She curled up and made it so only her eyes showed on her face. Her amber eyes glowed in the dark, occasionally blinking.
Nutpaw watched her with one eye still open, cautious in case she was simply attempting to trick him the moment he had his eyes closed. Staring at her bright amber eyes with his own yellow eyes, opening both eyes now, he waited, distrustful.
Harepaw was determind not to fall asleep. The least she could do was freak him out. Her eyelids grew heavy but she forced them to stay open.
Frustrated with waiting, Nutpaw eventually closed his eyes and curled back up, wrapping his tail around his body. She was strange, he had decided, but supposedly she would keep to her promise and not wind him up. One less cat winding him up? That sounded good.
When Harepaw had seen Nutpaw closed his eyes she allowed herself to rest. She closed her eyes and drifted off into a peaceful sleep. Her day had been very successful.
Duskpaw slunk inside, curling up in her nest at the corner of the den. She lay with her back to the other apprentices, staring at the wall with dull green eyes. Of course Dawnpaw would get to go...she's the nice one, the perfect one. she thought to herself angrily. She could be nice if she wanted. Couldn't she?
Harepaw woke up as Duskpaw entered. She recognized her. She like Duskpaw. She wasn't one of those nice cats. She watched Duskpaw without saying anything. Then she remembered, tonight was the gathering!
