Hi y'all! Elaine here, taking being an active member a notch higher since I was left with no choice asked to host the Biweekly Meme for the first half of July. Hehehe

Anyway, taking off from the Audio book month, let's continue into harnessing our love for music. Whenever I read, I always imagine the story being made into a movie and the part I love most about movies, are the soundtracks! I like listening to soundtracks because aside from scripts, actors and cinematography, soundtracks also define the movie.

So how does this connect with our Meme? Imagine your favorite book being made into a movie and you were given the task to provide an awesome soundtrack which will define the story.

Mechanics:
1. Choose your favorite book and provide a plot summary so we all have an idea what the soundtrack will be all about.
2. Compile 5-8 songs or musical scores which will describe the story. Please include a link for your songs.
3. Provide a title for your soundtrack. Be creative, come up with something other than the book title. :P
4. Participants will receive a stamp and 2 winners will be determined by judges and will receive a prize.
5. You can post your list here until the 14th and the winners will be announced the next day.

Tip: Just think of songs or scores which remind you of the story, that will get you started. I hope you guys enjoy compiling your soundtracks. I can't wait to hear them. ;)

Book Title: The Ocean at the End of the Lane
Summary: A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. Although the house he lived in is long gone, he is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock, and her mother and grandmother. He hasn't thought of Lettie in decades, and yet as he sits by the pond (a pond that she'd claimed was an ocean) behind the ramshackle old farmhouse, the remembered past comes flooding back. And it is a past too strange, too frightening, too dangerous to have happened to anyone, let alone a small boy.

Summary:
(view spoiler)[Young dreamer Eiji Miyaki came to Tokyo to find out who his father is. He found a job in the lost property office of a station and lived above a video shop. At the start, he staked out the office of the lawyer who knows his father at a café where he fantasized different scenarios in confronting the lawyer. There, he also met Ai Imajo, a girl that would be his love interest afterwards. Eiji also kept on thinking and daydreaming about his twin sister’s death and his alcoholic mother who abandoned them. Horrible things happened to him which started when he played at the video games arcade. He was tricked by Daimon, left at a hotel with a huge bill to pay, kidnapped by the yakuza and involved in their wars. After escaping from the yakuza, he stayed in an unknown house and read anthropomorphic tales (about a goatwriter) written by its owner. He placed an advert in a Tokyo paper to find his father. Because of this, he met a private detective that told him about another yakuza scam. He also met his grandfather who gave him his great uncle’s journal about days in the war as a kaiten pilot during the World War II. Bad luck continued with his step mother and sister, relationship with Ai, working at a pizza place, and encounters with the yakuza again, until he finally met his father and decided to reconcile with his mother. Travelling back home, there came a typhoon and an earthquake, and then Eiji decided to run back.

A montage showcasing New York in all it's seedy and noirish glory. Alleyways, homicide scenes, prostitutes on the street, drug dealers selling their wares, corrupt cops hustling men on the street, and the like. As the song ends, we zoom into the window of one room in an apartment building. Inside the room, we see Daniel Quinn, our protagonist, trying to write.

2. The Wrong Number - Soul of a Man by Beck

As Daniel Quinn is writing one night, he receives a phone call asking for Paul Auster, a private detective. He says that the caller got the wrong number and hangs up. The next night, the caller calls again but Daniel lets it ring until the caller gives up. On the third night, the phone rings again. Daniel answers and, like he anticipated, the caller is asking for Paul Auster, the private detective. This time, Daniel says that he is Paul Auster. The caller asks for a meet. "Don't forget, Mr. Auster. You must come."

3. Father & Son - Papaoutai by Stromae

The client is Virginia Stillman, the wife of a deranged man whose name is Peter Stillman. Peter's father, Boston Stillman, imprisoned Peter from infancy until Peter was 11 years old in an effort to make Peter learn the language of God. Once Peter was discovered by the authorities, Boston was imprisoned. He was to be released soon and Virginia wants Daniel to make sure that Boston won't harm Peter anymore.

4. Following - Burma-Shave by Tom Waits

The next day, Peter decides to wait at Grand Central Station to wait for the arrival of Boston Stillman. He sees Boston Stillman and a doppelganger yet cannot distinguish which is which. He decides on one and follows him. A bizarre foot chase that goes on for days follow.

5. The Meeting - Nuit Suir de Champs-Elysees by Miles Davis

After days of following Boston around, Daniel decides to make first contact. He approached Boston three times in as many days. First, he introduced himself as Daniel Quinn, then as Henry Dark (an old alias of Boston), and finally as Peter Stillman. The next day, Boston vanishes without a trace.

6. The Two Austers - Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen

In an effort to find Boston, Peter decided to visit Paul Auster, the detective, and ask for advice. He visited the one Paul Auster he can find in the address books and, to his dismay, discover that he is an author and not a detective. He tells his story anyway then they discuss other things. The next day, Peter finds that he can no longer contact Virginia Stillman.


7. Into The Rabbit Hole/Through The Looking Glass - Where Is My Mind by The Pixies

Peter decides to surreptitiously wait outside Virginia Stillman's house to wait for her. An unknown amount of time pass and we see Peter ragged and driven to obsession. He tries to go back home but discovers that his apartment is now occupied by a different person and his belongings sold off as the world now assumes that Peter is dead. From Paul Auster, he learned that Boston Stillman committed suicide. Now on his last legs, Peter forces his way into the Stillman's residence and he finds it empty. He curls down on the center of the floor and he begins writing over the course of many days.

8. The End - Fairytale of New York by The Pogues

It's now winter in New York. A tracking shot of a man going through the streets of New York begins. The man's face is obstructed all the time. We see familiar landmarks and a Christmas vibe is in the air. The man finally arrives at the Stillman's residence. He enters and goes from bare room to bare room. Finally, in one room, he finds Daniel Quinn's notebook at the center. He picks it up and the scene fades to black.
