In the book the Garde children possess extraordinary abilities, but live in hiding among us. Do you think there are really people like that?

No.

How can you be sure?

A human's need for understanding and having a meaning for something is what refrains us from thinking willingly up to that level. (For example, the whole purpose that religion is said to have been created was for people to have an understanding as to why and how they are here, even that explanation is split into tons of religious denominations that are all believed, by at least one person, to be the right answer. But even with an answer...people doubt (atheists etc.) There will always be people from both parties existing this world, the nay sayers and the ones to accept what is being said.

There is no way we can know at this time and place whether there are beings among us that hide with capabilities like the ones demonstrated in this novel, so since we can't find out it's easier to say "no" they don't live among us rather than dwell on the unknown.

I would like to think there are magical beings in the world. They may not be what we have in mind, but I do believe they are here. Maybe they are in hiding waiting for a time when we need help or maybe they help us through our daily lives and we don't even notice. You have to keep your mind open to the world, because if you don't..... You might just miss the opportunity to be extraordinary
