They were both geniuses. Stephanie Mercer and Louis Cadence met first in high school, and again in Mensa. They found it ironic that they'd met twice, and kind of felt obligated to start hanging out. Turned out they had a lot in common. Louis was a doctor and Stephanie was a lawyer, so both were in high class positions. But neither of them were the most responsible at the time. They were in their mid twenties when Stephanie was pregnant. The two hastened to get married, not wanting to deal with their parents disapproval. They gave birth to a little boy they named Colten, and about three years later a girl, Adria.
┠ Childhood ┨
Neither Stephanie not Louis quit their jobs to spend time with their kids. Colten and Adria always knew their parents loved them, but spent their days at a daycare instead of with their parents. Right from the start the two were pushed in the brain department. Time spent with their parents wasn't doing little games and stuff, it was instead Louis quizzing them about the best way to set broken bones and Stephanie reading aloud cases and testing her kids on what the person in the case could be prosecuted for. Both of the kids were exceptionally good at it, and preferred it when they could talk it out with each other. They always worked well together.
When they were seven, Colten and Adria made a decision. They wanted a pet. They didn't tell their parents, but they did a bunch of research. The final decision was that they wanted a kitten. To buy the kitten they sold lemonade (their parents were delighted by their entrepreneurship) and Adria sold Girl Scout cookies. Eventually they had the money, and they got their kitten. But they still didn't tell their parents. They hid the kitten (that they named Wolf) in their adjoining bedrooms for a month before they were found out. But they explained everything, and Stephanie and Louis decided that the kids should be allowed to keep the kitten, as long as they took care of it and paid for everything. Colten and Adria swore they would, and held up their promise. Wolf was given the run of the house, and Stephanie and Louis agreed it was a perfect kitten. And when the kids were running low on money to pay for Wolf's things, they never called out their parents when their allowance was boosted for a week, just enough to pay for Wolf's things they needed.

Adria excelled in school. She tried to live up to their parents' expectations, studying every chance she got. She was helping Colten with his homework once he hit high school. He grew frustrated. She was younger than him, and their parents pushed him harder than ever. And finally, he snapped. He got fed up with all the pressure and expectations, and not feeling like he was good enough. He quit trying altogether. He wanted to completely drop out, but Adria insisted he didn't.
Even when he was failing his classes, Adria was excelling hers. She was good enough that her parents made her skip a grade when the school offered it. So she hit high school only two years after her brother. Of course, she was swallowed up. She was the youngest in her grade and at the time, the school. Despite how sweet she was, she was never the type to go out of her way to talk to people. And she was looked down on. Whenever she knew the answer in class no one else did, she was always accused of cheating or hint a know it all. No matter what she did, in the high schoolers eyes it was always wrong. It went from casual teasing to vicious tormenting, people purposefully going out of their way to bully her. Of course, they were subtle about it. At first it was just bumping into her in the hallway and spilling all her books and when she went to pick them up her homework was mysteriously missing. But as time went on they grew more and more cruel, stealing things from her locker, shoving her around, and locking her in her locker.
And she didn't have enough backbone to tell them to stop, or tell any adults. She only told Colten about the small things for a long time, until eventually she had to call him to get her out of the locker. Once he got wind of the severity of it, he found out who had hurt her and made sure it wouldn't happen again. Their parents were horrified when they heard he'd beaten someone up, but Adria vouched staunchly for him and swore up and down it hadn't been him. With her perfect record compared to the witness's and bullies he'd taken care of, Colten was let off the hook. No one messed with her anymore throughout high school, and she became valedictorian.
┠ Adulthood ┨
Despite high school being hard, college was her time to shine. She had decided from the moment they got Wolf that she wanted to be a veterinarian. With her brains and parental insistence and influence, she got into the top veterinarian college in the country. That meant that she had to move cross country. As a going away present her parents got her two new kittens, which she named Saber and Tiger. The one thing she really didn't want to do was leave Colten behind. So, he surprised her. He had enrolled in a police academy in the same neighborhood as her college. The two moved out together, her with her two cats and him with his dog, Bear. They got apartments beside each other, ones with a door connecting them. Neither of them were relationship people, so it was frequent to just leave the door open and barge into each other's place. They helped each other study and just generally were each other's best and only friends.
She decided that she wanted her schooling be more specific. She branched off from just plain vet to a zoologist veterinarian, working with more exotic animals. She quickly became the best in her class and graduated early, soon getting a job at a top zoo. Colten graduated soon as well, but the two remained in their neighboring apartments and as friends. Because of how good she was at her job, she was selected to come to the island and it's unique and special collection of wild animals. Her parents were thrilled, but Colten wasn't. He knew it was dangerous, and he couldn't bear the little sister he'd always looked out for getting hurt. But she was determined to take this opportunity, and packed up her stuff anyway. Saved and Tiger were given to Colten, and he rather reluctantly had to accept that she was leaving.

╬═ Personality ═╬
For the most part, Cade is pretty quiet. She's sweet and friendly, but not very outgoing. When she's talking about something she knows well is the one time she can get a bit bold and almost bossy. But then she's always really embarrassed about it and will babble to try and fix it, then usually fall awkwardly quiet and want to leave. If you come up and talk to her she'll be completely kind and helpful, eager to please. Whenever you need any kind of help, she's the person to call. Despite the fact she's not going to go right up to a stranger and start talking to them, if they come over to her she had no problem talking to them. If she sees someone being picked on or shy, Cade will go over and help them, or just introduce herself and stay quiet if that's what's required.
She's incredibly smart, book wise. It's easy for her to rattle off random facts, but anything real? Dating, street smarts, any of that... She's worse than useless. Way worse. She's actually fairly naive and almost innocent about real world things. Which is why when she does talk, she trips over herself. She always sticks her foot in her mouth, accidentally saying something, usually an innuendo, and then babbling to try and fix it but only actually making it worse.
