I also read The Handmaid's Tale several years ago. Since then I read Atwood's Madd Addam trilogy. (Oryx and Crake, etc.) The Handmaid's Tale is the best Atwood for me, so far.
I read The Handmaid's Tale three years ago. It's on my list of books everyone should read. Atwood's prose style is so subtle, it's almost as if she tells us the story in whispers - it's clandestine, so no one will overhear. The ending leaves us wondering - did she or didn't she. It's very good.
According to Worlds Without End ( https://www.worldswithoutend.com )
The Handmaid's Tale has won or been nominated for four awards:
1986 Nebula Nominated
1987 Clarke Winner
1987 Locus SF Nominated
1987 Prometheus Nominated
And is on a number of lists:
The ISFDB Top 100 Books (Balanced List)
WWEnd Top Nominated Books

SF Mistressworks
Guardian: The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Novels

I have just read this because the 2017 TV version is currently being shown in the UK. The TV is more dramatic but I enjoyed the book too.
Written in 1984 the scenario is very up to date. If a democratically elected western government was overthrown, it could easily be blamed on Islamists. Also one of the first things they did in Gilead was get rid of cash currency and only a few days ago, one of our politicians here in the UK suggested we should do that. Scary stuff.
