Laura | 500 comments Hope everyone is enjoying the book so far!

This discussion is about the first four chapters up to the point where Sophie finds out she is being sent to work in the orphanage.

This discussion will contain spoilers for chapters 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Laura | 500 comments I don't like Sophie's character - but in a good way! She is the opposite of most main characters in NA books. Rich, vain (obviously :P), mean, thinks shes better than everyone else, and just simply a bitch.

I felt sorry for Sophie in how her parents care more about appearances more than they do their own daughter.

I was suprised by what happened at the end of this section, i really wasn't expecting it. I though Sophie might end up disowned but not sent to Africa! This was an aspect to the book i wasn't expecting so i am interested to see how it affects the rest of the book.

Jennifer Thomas | 29 comments I think the worst part of this section for her, was when Spencer's dad came on to her. I thought briefly "she is horrible and deserves it", but then realized she really has some awful adults in her life. I loved Pemmy from the beginning, he is the only stable presence in her life and he is basically only around when she is in trouble. Huh? maybe that's exactly why she does the things she does. Negative attention from the only adult who gives her any positive "affection".

Nevaeh Lee (goodreadscomnevaehlee) | 13 comments That's one of the reasons I liked this book so much. We read so often characters who had to overcome physical abuse, etc., but what Sophie's parents put her through is its own form of abuse. Who wouldn't seek attention in other ways when they received none from the people who were supposed to love them? It definitely made me empathize with her...

The other reason I liked it is the punishment she receives. Totally makes the book. I was afraid at first the whole book was going to take place in her little rich-kid world and this was a fantastic surprise. I'll stop there since I've read the rest already....;o)

Riana (rianaardila) yeah! i think this idea of her punishment was good for her. she is so vain, mean, and selfish. but i'm still liking her because she know deep down she didn't like herself being like that all the time. but she has no way out from her society.
i'm still finding time to read the rest of this book but i thought maybe i'm not gonna make it this month :(
