The PW piece was forwarded to me by my agent, and it's a pretty interesting dilemma. Because the publication of the Canon took place over a period of 40 years, some of them are in the public domain (in the US) and some of them are not. Then there is the issue of Holmes himself who is in all of the stories, as well as characters who may be featured in both public domain tales and those still held under copyright.
