First readers as in beta readers, or can these be used to generate pre-release reviews? Or either/or?

Sure, beta readers. So, the first person with whom you share your finished work, be it a short story, poem, novel, or non-fiction piece.

Whether or not a pre-release review will result will be up to the pair. There are no requirements here, except those agreed upon by the pair.

I do not have any finished work. I have been researching on my first novel, but I have no written work to submit. I would be happy to be a beta reader though, unless this is a deal killer. :)

Oh, BTW..thanks for the article by Stephen King. I am a big fan of his and respect his advice. I loved "On Writing" by him and believe I reviewed it on here. I am always on the the lookout on what to avoid as a new author.

This article was very influential for me. I was something like 18 when I first read it. Funny how some stuff stays with you through the years... lol

Hi guys, I've got a question, and I'm not sure if this is the best place to ask it, but how do the mods of this group feel when it comes to posting about paid services? It seems as though everyone in the group is looking for a reader, but rarely a reader looking to beta read.

Anyway, I’m a writer, both traditionally and self-published, who at one point poked around the internet, looking for paid beta readers and was absolutely shocked to see some of the prices—occasionally upwards of $200 a manuscript. Needless to say, I backed off the idea pretty quickly, but it’s prompted me to start my own beta reading side business with actual reasonable prices.

I’ll read, comment extensively, and use track changes for any manuscript of 85,000 words for a flat rate of $40. You can find samples of the kinds of things to expect here:

And any prospective clients can request I read 4,000 words for free before committing to anything. Once you receive my feedback, you can make your decision, and no hard feelings should you change your mind.

My point in expanding on this idea was to help authors get real, respectful feedback for a price that won’t bankrupt them.
