Welcome to the Young Adult Historical Fiction book group. I've always been a fan of historical fiction and would love to meet many other fans of this genre.

So this thread is a place to introduce yourself to the other members of this group and tell everyone a little about yourself.

Hi, I'm Rhaine! I love to read - especially historical fiction. Some of my favourite eras to read about are the Tudor period and World War II. I can't wait to meet other fans of historical fiction! :)

Hey, I'm Ellie and I'm 13. I love reading Historical fiction and right now I'm reading The Queen's Daughter by Susan Coventry. I'm nearly half-way through and so far it's pretty good.
My favourite historical periods are Medieval & Tudor and my favourite books (so far) are The Nostradamus Prophecy and I, Coriander. I really like Theresa Breslin and Mary Hooper.

Hi! I'm Emma Louise! I'm 14 years old and I'm a big fan of young adult historical fiction and fantasy. Right now, I'm particularly interested in the 19th and 20th century, having already read the heck out of everything Tudor there is out there! I don't usually mind if it's adventure, romance, mystery, etc, just as long as there's some neat character to go with it. My favourite books are the Harry Potter series, A Northern Light, and The Help.

Harry Potter has always been one of my favourite books and I really enjoyed reading A Northern Light as well, although its been a while since I read.

Good evening and good weekend everyone. I feel like the old lady in this group of teenagers. I am author Laurel A. Rockefeller, the mind behind the Peers of Beinan series. Peers of Beinan is not directly historical fiction, more because I'm a serious history hobbiest and have been playing in the Society for Creative Anachronism my entire adult life -- over 20 years. If you look at my profile, I am wearing a 16th century Irish ensemble I made -- really want a gown made of clan Doyle or Riley tartan, but right now those cost 100 pounds PER YARD!

One of my peeves about historical fiction is accuracy. So I set my books on a planet in another galaxy to facilitate the telling of a more historical story (if that makes any sense to anyone). Beinarian women, for example, wear bliauts (a beautiful 11th century European style of gown) over kirtles (which evolved greatly over a 400 year span of time and are mistakenly called "chemises").

Great Succession Crisis is based on the lives of Queen Catherine de Valois (extended edition includes a short biography I wrote on her) and Queen Elizabeth Tudor. In fact, almost everything that I write in my "science fiction" series is supportable by historical, anthropological, and/or scientific data. How many fiction writers bother with bibliographies?

But it's a habit I've learned in spending more than half my life as a medieval re-enactor.

Some books I really love...almost anything Jane Austen, Marion Zimmer Bradley (one of those historical fiction writers I feel actually got it right; I've fact-checked her!), and of course JRR Tolkien!

Right now my reading is more or less on pause. I am learning braille, finally, after losing most of my sight as a teenager. Braille is harder than it sounds. I feel a bit overwhelmed by it!

Hi all, I'm Nisha! I like reading all sorts of young adult fiction but I have a definite weak spot for historical ya fiction so this group was a great find :)

I've read everything from Jennifer Donnelly to Jane Austen and everything in between so I'm always looking for new suggestions. My favourite period tends to be the Victorian era but I'll happily read fiction set in any historical period. I'm about to start Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.

I know a lot of people who have read them and an equal number of those who have. I have not personally. I do not feel guilty.

I've only read a couple of the
Harry Potter books, which is pretty bad as my sister is like the biggest potterhead ever! :s i just pretend that ive read them all...dont tell her.

I actually have all the books, but I haven't got around to read them.

That's interesting. I happen to be the biggest HP fan so I highly recommend them. But no pressure. Take your own time.

Im pretty sure i watch a HP movie each week, my sister and i watched 7.1 yesterday and number three was last week! :)

Same here! Every weekend has been a HP weekend this past month and I managed to do all of 7 in one sitting :)

I've always wanted to do a Harry Potter marathon (all 8 movies at once) but you'd have to be in one spot for like 16 hours at least!

I've always wanted to do a Harry Potter marathon as well, but 16 hours plus stopping might be a little bit too long. I guess I'll have to satisfy myself with a Harry Potter reading marathon.

Hello! I'm an almost-thirty-year-old who grew up reading Anne of Green Gables, the American Girls, Sally Lockhart and Laura Ingalls Wilder. I moved to the Pacific Northwest three years ago and found myself quite in the minority! It's all sci-fi and fantasy, which I have grown to love, but I still have no one to discuss HFYA with. Current favorites include Michelle Cooper's Montmaray trilogy, so good!

My name is Michael and I’m an YA author. My current offering is an historical mystery/thriller set in Victorian times featuring a heroine who discovers that she’s a materialising medium. I’m also an avid reader. I love nothing better than a well-crafted story, especially one with an historical backdrop that has been well researched. I’m a great fan of Steven Saylor’s Roma Sub Rosa books featuring Gordianus, the finder, though they’re not strictly YA. I’ve also enjoyed Carlos Ruiz Zaphon’s two YA outings, Malorie Blackman, Philip Pullman and Elizabeth Laird. And who wouldn’t like Harry Potter?

I started reading Anne of Green Gables, but I lost interest. I must start to read it again.

Yay! Anne is my favorite. I re-read the series once a year.

I agree with you Michael, the Sally Lockhart books are great! I think they were some of the first historical fiction books I read growing up - apart from the classics of course.

Btw I've added your book to my "to read" list. Congrats on the glowing reviews!

Hi everybody! I'm Shelby - 18 years old. I've been a fan of historical fiction for a few years and I'm especially fond of Ancient Egyptian and Asian settings. I'm pretty open-minded about the genre, but I do tend to hover toward female perspectives!

Hi, guys! My name is Tara! I really like historical fiction; it's one of my favorite genres. I used to be really into books about the American Revolution and the Civil War, but I don't read as many of those now because most of them are quite similar. For example, here's a book about the American Revolution.


Young girl is not living up to her parents expectations. She can't sew or cook well. She likes animals and is friends with a boy who she secretly plans to marry. If the author is trying to be original, maybe he's a tory. (But they almost always make the girl a patriot) her crush goes away to fight. *turn a few hundred pages* the end. Maybe her crush is dead, maybe they have political differences and can't marry, or maybe it's happily ever after. Done.


These books are often very cookie cutter. So I've turned my attentions to more modern history. However, I will read most any historical book if it's well written. I like ann rinaldi and kimberley brubaker bradley books. I really like "Someone Named Eva" by joan wolf and "second fiddle" by rosanne parry. And "before we were free" by julia alvarez.
