Read the following story and answer the questions in minimum 2-3 sentences below.

Where Can I Buy Some Self-confidence?
Written by Brenda B. Covert

People tell you that you have a skill, but you don't believe it. You can name five other people
who can do what you do but do it better. You're just being honest with yourself. You're nothing
special.
Now you've been chosen to demonstrate your skill in front of a small group of your peers. You
didn't volunteer for this assignment, and you don't want to do it. Just thinking about it makes you
feel queasy.
You've spoken to several classmates as well as adults about bowing out of the demonstration.
They all encourage you to stick with it. "I can't!" you exclaim. "I'll just embarrass myself!"
One person puts a hand on your shoulder, looks you in the eye, and says, "You can do it, but you
don't have any self-confidence. You need to believe in yourself."
The others agree. Your problem isn't a lack of skill; it's a lack of confidence in yourself. If only
you had some self-confidence, they say, you could pull off your demonstration with flair.
You shrug your shoulders. It's true that you don't have confidence. You also don't know how to
go about getting some. It's not like you can buy it at the store!
How would you react?
1. What skill or skills do you possess but would prefer not to demonstrate because of a lack of
confidence?
2. What would you do if a teacher asked you to demonstrate a skill in front of the class? Explain
your answer.
3. What do you feel is the main reason that you -- or someone like you -- lack self-confidence?
4. How important or unimportant is it to gain self-confidence before you become an adult? Explain
your answer.
5. What advice would your teacher give you about developing self-confidence?
6. What three things could your friends do to help you gain self-confidence?
7. How would your life be different if your level of self-confidence were higher than it currently is?
8. Short essay:

What is your plan of action for improving your self-confidence?
Suppose you tell your teacher that you don't want to demonstrate your skill for the class. How will
your teacher react to your decision? How do you feel about yourself? What will your friends say about
your choice? Will it matter to you if refusing to participate affects your grade? Explain your answer.
Suppose another classmate agrees to demonstrate the skill you have but isn't as skilled as you are. You
know you could have done a better job. Will you regret the choice you made? Explain your answer.
How will your lack of self-confidence likely affect your future in school and as an adult?
