What's the Name of That Book??? discussion

A friend told me about a book he read a long time ago about a comet hitting the Earth! Basic storyline is, a comet hits the Earth, and brings about the end of life as we know it. The comet hits the ocean, causing mass flooding, salt rain (destruction of plant life), and the people who were at high altitudes survive. One group of people who live are a scout troop. So the people who are left start to make communities on mountains, and instead of letting anyone in they rate you on your skill set. For example farmers would be crucial, but a mechanic not so much. Then a guy comes along with scuba equipment and he is very valuable as there is a wealth of canned food in the stores that are submerged! That's really the story from what I am told. He thinks the title is Maelstrom's Comet, but I am getting no results. Any help would be awesome!

Sounds like Lucifer's Hammer to me (the scout troop is a key element).

Life As We Knew It There's something about a troop later on or some similar organization. It's been a while since I've read it.

Super, Meagan! But Dan seems to be absent, so I'll move this thread to 'abandoned by poster.' It'll still be open, though, if he does come back later, of course.
