Amara Tanith (aftanith) | 733 comments The poll for March's theme has ended, and the winner is Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover, aka Ugly Covers.

So now it's time to see what book you'll be reading in the upcoming month! Remember, of course, that beauty is in the eye of the beholder--if you think a cover is ugly or unattractive, use the book for the theme! If you don't have an unattractive covers on your shelves already, there are plenty of places to browse some of the world's less beautiful covers. Some examples are:

Worst Cover Art Listopia
Worst Gay (M/M) Book Covers Listopia
Horrible Covers Listopia
Wonderful Books with Awful Covers Listopia
Humorous, Weird, Shocking, and/or Plain Awful Book Covers Listopia
Bad Book Covers Tumblr (Some Covers May Be NSFW!)
Lousy Book Covers Tumblr
... and more!

If you want to discuss the book with others who have read it or are reading it, remember to create a new thread in the March 2013 folder and attach the book to it.

If you aren't interested in complying with this month's theme for whatever reason, you can head on over to the Theme Rebels folder and tell us about what you're reading instead.

And don't forget to vote on the poll for April's theme. The poll for May's theme will be open for voting on March first.

Happy reading, everyone!

Amara Tanith (aftanith) | 733 comments I think I might read Sole Survivor by Dean Koontz , but I'm not quite sure yet; I have quite a few books with some really half-assed covers on my Kindle, so I might try to plow through those instead...?

message 5: by Janet (new)

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 101 comments I will read Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov . But I think Melissa has found the best book for this month. Flu by Wayne Simmons has to be the ugliest book cover ever.

message 6: by Caroline (new)

Caroline (caro7) Yeah. I agree, Janet. I'd be pissed if I were the author of that book! :D

message 7: by Megan (new)

Megan I'm reading Outlander (Outlander, #1) by Diana Gabaldon . What a stupid book cover.

Brandi A friend of mine has Skippy Dies by Paul Murray on a shelf in her living room, and it always catches my eye because of its garish colours and pattern. So I'll be reading that one in March.

You are right. Not sure whether this one or Melissa's book cover is more disgusting.

When you make a comment, just click on "add book/author" which is above the comment box. Then when you find your book, be sure that "cover" is clicked also (instead of "link").

Maybe one of us can look at your list and choose for you. I think lots of book covers are ugly! :D :D

(Then again, maybe I'm not such a good person; I find the Sookie book covers charming. :| I love this thread, though; it's really interesting to me to see what people think is an ugly cover. Some of them all of us can agree on, but then there are some that some of us may like!)

It is good... just WAY too long!! Its the longest book I've ever read. 804 pages!! Im challenging myself this year and gonna read a few really long books. We'll see how that goes!

message 24: by Michaela (new)

Michaela (michaelarae1) I'll be reading Les Miserables Tome 1 by Victor Hugo this month. Excited about the read, not so excited about the cover. :(

message 25: by Claire-Jane (last edited Mar 01, 2013 12:52PM) (new)

Claire-Jane There isn't actually a picture on here to do justice to the horror of the vile cover wrapped around the copy of Book of Daniel that I'm reading at the mo . . . It's a plain black cover that has aged badly and faded to a nasty shade of off green / black . . . It's more of a bruise than a book cover . . . .

message 30: by Lamilla (new)

Lamilla I quite like the covers of the books I own. If nothing dreadful arrives, I'll probably reread Harry Potter or Sookie series - I'm not impressed by the official artwork

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll start with Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan , which isn't so much ugly as dull--and I do not like yellow, so that's close enough for me!

message 32: by Dana (last edited Mar 04, 2013 09:28AM) (new)

Dana Crouch (Callaway) (bookknurd) | 101 comments Of the three books I'm currently reading, one has I cover I don't like, one has a cover that's just ok, and one has I cover I love.

So my first book for this month's theme is The Monstrumologist (The Monstrumologist, #1) by Rick Yancey . I would have never picked this book up just by looking at the cover. I can see where it would grab some people's attention, but it is not appealing to me at all.

This story sounds good (and he's got a new book coming out this year that's getting great buzz, The 5th Wave). I find the paperback cover, with the skulls in the background, worse. It's rare that I like a cover that has a skull on it.

Janet (goodreadscomjanetj) | 101 comments Starting The Day of the Locust The Day of the Locust by Nathanael West tonight. Another very unattractive cover.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm going to read some of the Stephanie plum books by Janet Evanovich. They aren't ugly per say, but they are pretty boring and had they not been highly reccomended to me I wouldn't have read them based on the cover (because I am so guilty of reading books soley because I like the cover.)

message 40: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (butbooksarebetter) Just finished The Woman in Black The Woman in Black by Susan Hill - thought the cover was pretty ugly (though I had the audiobook version so had very little exposure to the cover once it was loaded on my mp3 player). The book was ok - though not as scary as I thought it could have been.
