This was one of my first horror reads many, many years ago. It still stands as one of the better shock horror stories.

This was the first horror novel I ever read as a teenager (second being 'Salem's Lot/Stephen King). Finally read this again after all these years. Did not remember much about it but was absolutely amazed at how well it still stands up. This is a really gripping and scary novel. It is no surprise James Herbert became Britain's No. 1 horror writer.

Hope to read the 2 sequels soon. The Fog will always be my favourite though.

The Rats is my all time favourite horror novel, and the one that made me an instant JH fan. This masterpiece was also chiefly responible for my taking up the horror writing pen myself.
