I just finished Gone Girl by Jillian Flynn. Good murder mystery thriller. Beginning is very slow but once it picks up you won't put it down

It was good! Except the ending fell flat for me. I also read her book 'Dark Places' and want to read 'Sharp Objects' next!
I was fine with the ending of Gone Girl - I thought it was pretty chilling. My main beef with the story was Desi - kind of a convenient and not very believable character. Still, it was an addictive book that I couldn't put down, and definitely would recommend it to others. I got the Kindle summary for Dark Places, but the main character was so completely unlikable that I decided not to buy it without a recommendation. Does she get any more likeable?
I read Gone Girl and loved it until the ending and am on the waiting list for the other two at my library (free kindle editions - yay)! I used to be a huge Patricia Cornwell fan but her last several books haven't been as good. Currently, I'm reading World War Z. Not my usual type of book but I am loving it!!
Totally agree with Ashley! Now I'm reading a light YA novel 'Elsewhere' by Gabrielle Zevin - a nice change from the dark stuff. Synopsis: "Welcome to Elsewhere. It is warm, with a breeze, and the beaches are marvelous. It’s quiet and peaceful. You can’t get sick or any older. Curious to see new paintings by Picasso? Swing by one of Elsewhere’s museums. Need to talk to someone about your problems? Stop by Marilyn Monroe’s psychiatric practice..."
I read Gone Girl and Dark Places, but neither was as good as Sharp Objects. I finished it today. I loved it. Gone Girl had a disappointing ending. Dark Places didn't have anyone to root for. Sharp Objects was much better.
I started Dark Places a few days ago. Very engaging (despite a slow start), but man oh man, it depresses the hell out of me.I also am in the middle of Tell The Wolves I'm Home. I recommend this book - good story and great character development
I read Dark Places and loved it. Couldn't get through the first 50 pages of Gone Girl and am a bit pissed off since everyone likes it so much. I think I will have to give it another try.

And like a roller coaster ride, once you click slowly UP the hill (in this case the setup), the book will pick up speed and take you through twists and turns you didn't see coming.
Your situation might be more difficult because you have already heard the hype regarding this book so your expectations may be too high. I've had many a good solid book ruined for me because I had too high expectations. Tina Fey's Bossy Pants comes to mind.
I'm reading The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes (sp) I cannot put it down. I started it yesterday and despite many interruptions I'm about halfway finished. So far I recommend it.
I just started to read The Shining Girls too, and I love it so far. I will let you know what I think when I finish it!
I finished it and loved it! Just downloaded "What the Dead Know" I haven't had chance to start reading yet.
I loved Gone Girl, but like others, I was disappointed with the ending. I have Sharp Objects and Dark Places on my to-read list but haven't gotten to either of them yet. I just finished The Art of Hearing Heartbeats. It's a love story, which is not usually my style, but I really enjoyed this one. It was a nice easy summertime beachy read. I think next I'm going to completely change directions and dig into The Song of Fire and Ice (Game of Thrones) series.
