Ed Wagemann (edwagemann) | 1013 comments In 1985, from the suburbs of Philadelphia, the Dead Milkmen were set to cash in on hardcore Punk - just as it was becoming a parody of itself - with their pop punk debut album Big Lizard in My Backyard.

Within two years they would have an Mtv hit, get name checked on the back of a Major League rookie's baseball card and record a song by Outsider Music darling Daniel Johnston. Exaggeratedly sarcastic, whiney and irrelevent, with songs like "Labor Day" (that bemoans having nothing to watch on tv but 'fucking Jerry Lewis' and his telethon) and "Beach Party Vietnam", the Dead Milkmen produced songs lyrics that were were characeristic of mid 80s suburb-punk's attempts at outrageousness and humor that at times came off as pathetic cries for attention.

I'm not sure about classic, but pretty damn good. Much to Sparky Anderson's chagrin, that Major League rookie you mention, Jim Walewander, brought the Milkmen into the Tiger dugout for a quick look-see.

Ed Wagemann (edwagemann) | 1013 comments I remember someone showing me that card many moons ago because I had put "Big Lizard in my backyard" on a mixed tape that I played a lot. I haven't seen that card since though. Thanks for posting that. A very strange juxtaposition for 1987: punk pop and major league baseball. Punk and skating, sure. But punk and baseball? They just seemed like they were two totally different worlds back then.

Right click on the image in question and then right click on Properties. Copy the URL address and the insert it in the text of your message like this:

img src="URL address in question"

with a "less-than-sign" (<) just to the left of "img" and a "greater-than-sign" (>) just to the right of the end quote.
