Ever have a totally random, yet deep philosophical musing about life? Like.. you're standing there making PB&J and BAM: you understand the misery of heartbreak in a totally new way.

Post your epiphanies right in here :D

Wow. Very true indeed XD

Ice Queen Wanderer •The Cursed Prophetess• (ari-la) | 107 comments Oddly enought, it's not a guarantee, or I'd be the new Justin Bieber.

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 379 comments If a person is born deaf, what language do they think in?

Ice Queen Wanderer •The Cursed Prophetess• (ari-la) | 107 comments Oh no, paradoxs are going to kill me.

Matthew (phoebus) | 679 comments The language they read.

But they don't know sounds...
so do they just think in letters and hand signals and pictures?

message 9: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (phoebus) | 679 comments The brain can understand what sounds they might shape even if they can't hear sound itself, the would learn what sounds the letters make by watching people's lips when they were little. ._.

message 10: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 379 comments But they don't know what a SOUND is.
It's like if i asked a blind person to tell me what color the sky is. They hear it's blue, but that's just hearsay.

message 11: by Matthew (last edited Feb 28, 2013 08:33PM) (new)

Matthew (phoebus) | 679 comments A blind person, depending on the blindness, can still have emotional reactions based off what the "see" without knowing what they are indeed seeing. In this case the receptors go to the feeling stimulation before they got to the image forming place(which is what is damaged in this case).

In the area of being deaf, the eardrum is broken so you don't get the vibrations to be able to hear actual sound itself. The brain is complex and intelligent though, it can figure out what sound might come from your mouth if you shaped it this way without being able to hear sound itself.

Definitely an intriguing thought. Those who become deaf can think in whatever language and sound they used to use. But someone deaf from birth? I have to wonder... do they "hear" the vibrations of their voice on the inside of their head, much like we do when we say "hmmmm" with closed lips?

message 13: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 379 comments Unless it's not the eardrum that is broken, but the auditory cortex in the brain, making it impossible to hear (and in some cases talk) so they won't be able to understand sound at all.
@Cheyla: That is true.

._. This is a lot more complex when you take in the variables (what is the piece broken in the chain - ear drum, brain, or something along the chain; do they hear their own vibrations; do they think in pictures or sign language...)
This is more complicated than I thought .>.

NEXT QUESTION!
Do thoughts have sound?
If not, then how can hear your own "voice" in your head?

message 14: by Hannah (new)

Hannah I'd say yes, thoughts do have sounds, but I've had to think about that for a bit. Maybe not actual sounds, but even so I'd say yes.

Marlene (marlene1001) | 490 comments I'd say it's depending of how aware you are of the thought. As I'm typing this, I "hear" the words I want to type in my head (along with a lot of other words I could use, but decide against immediately after I thought about it). But that's just what you know you're thinking.
I believe there are many layers of thought in your brain and you are not aware of all of them. They're there nontheless. So I guess some are there as pictures or maybe a sequence of pictures or just as feeling. You know, like that gut feeling you get.
What happened to me, for example, was that I thought about something happy or sad that happened, but the memory of feeling sad was there before the actual thought. I just registered it and thought about it further, which is when the words came in. Because it was a memory, it came along with pictures and things other people said.
Thoughts are a mix, I think. You could also ask if thoughts can also consist of smell. That is something I never thought about.

Ever think about how hard we try to please people, even though most of us are trying really hard to accept people for who they are?

Just something I realized. I don't know, maybe I'm crazy. But I'm always worrying how I come across to people. I worry without even thinking about it beforehand; it's just kind of automatic.

Whenever I meet people though, I always happily anticipate diving past the surface and getting to know the real them.

message 17: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (phoebus) | 679 comments I am always acting, even when I am not thinking about it, even here sometimes...

message 18: by E.J. (new)

E.J. (ejschoenborn) | 379 comments It's completely natural to act around people.
It's called the... oh what was it? We just learned it in psychology...
pretty much (lol, I give up), we just mimic other people's actions in order to make them like us.
That's why if a person you're talking to starts putting a hand on their hip or leaning on a wall, you start doing and also why you start walking in step with people.

message 19: by Matthew (new)

Matthew (phoebus) | 679 comments That's not exactly what I meant.

That's cool EJ. I heard somewhere that when you're in a job interview you're supposed to imitate the interviewer's body language to come across as a "friend" to the person and make them feel more comfortable around you. Psychology is kind of cool :3

Are you kidding? Psychology is freaking awesome! It's always amazing to me how people see and react to the world around us, including each other! Psychology Today is an incredible magazine, it talks about really interesting things, and just makes you think a lot more about things. The human mind is such a wildly interesting place! :)
