Pick-a-Shelf discussion

Hi everyone. I heard from Karen last week when she messaged me to ask me to choose a shelf for April. We're hoping she is OK, but to allow everyone to carry on as best we can, I'm posting my choice. I chose Travel. Hopefully the link will work, this is my first time trying to insert one here.

I'll be reading A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail. Not sure if I'll be able to fit any others in.

I'm planning on reading Assassination Vacation.

Bill Bryson is a great choice for this category, too. I enjoyed A Walk in the Woods, so I may pick up another one of his books if I've got time.

Another good pick is The Geography of Bliss One Grump's Search for the Happiest Places in the World, but I just read it a couple of months ago, so I won't be reading it next month.

Also, I find it interesting that Eclipse has been categorized as a travel book. Strange.

I can see a few I can read. Will add my list soon.

I'll be reading Anthony Bourdain's A Cook's Tour. I loved his Kitchen Confidential and this one sounds very mouthwatering ;)

If I can get a hold of Anne Tyler's The Accidental Tourist I'll read that. If not I'll go with something on hand. Jack Kerouac's On the Road The Original Scroll or Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

I'm looking at Into Thin Air: A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster by Jon Krakauer, No Reservations: Around the World on an Empty Stomach by Anthony Bourdain, and then When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home by Erma Bombeck for some travel humor.

I'm trying to cut down on my book spending habit so I was trying to see what is listed on this shelf that I actually have on my TBR pile. *hang head in shame* I don't seem to have much on this topic. I found a few more that I don't think I would necessarily list under Travel but I could see how a persons train of thought would lead them there on these slightly more so then with Eclipse...LOL (but really I still don't think I'd list them as Travel). I will however try to read a couple of them to read from this shelf, and If I get a chance I may stop by the Library, but for now here they are.

I thought the same thing about Eclipse. I don't remember any traveling in that book in the series. New Moon would have been a better choice for the shelf (Although I wouldn't have labeled it a Travel book).

Jamie I just finished Assassination Vacation last month (or it would have been one of my picks), and it was a very witty and interesting read, especially if you are interested in politics.

I see several I'd be interested in reading but the only one I actually own is Walk in the Woods. Haven't read it for a few years, so may have to read it again. Otherwise, I'll have to see what is actually available in the library, didn't have much success before.. The subject interests me. If I can get hold of it, I'm fascinated by the title "If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name: News from Small-Town Alaska" by Heather Lende. Won't touch many shelves, but sounds like something I could relate to!

The only one I own in my TBR pile is Weekend in Paris. Since I am studying for an exam this month I many not get more than that in, if I do it will be something less fluffy.

I'm planning to visit Japan later this year, so will read one of the books on Japan. Any suggestions which is a good one? (have already eliminated "Wrong about Japan" on the basis of the bad reviews).

Sunflower- A Year in Japan has really high ratings. I looked at that book, then decided to read Japanland A Year in Search of Wa instead.

Thanks Tara. It might boil down to what's in the local library. Agree about the Twilight books, and seriously wonder why the Outlander series is in here too; I suppose time travel counts as travel?

I'm going to start with I'll Never Be French (no matter what I do) Living in a Small Village in Brittany by Mark Greenside. I hope to actually have the time to also read How Not To Live Abroad by Shaun Briley and/or If You Lived Here, I'd Know Your Name News from Small-Town Alaska by Heather Lende.

I have not read Outlander yet, but my thought is maybe since it takes place in Scotland? It probably should not be on the list either, but since it was in my TBR pile, I went with it.

Tara - I'm still holding off on Outlander because I think I will be addicted and need to read the whole series once I start:)

It's one of my husband's favorite books. I watched the documentary with him and loved it, so I have high hopes for the book, too.

Time Traveller's Wife. I hope! I haven't been living up to my reading expectations lately.

I was going to re-read Bill Bryson's Walk in the Woods but just found out we have a copy of his In a Sun-burned Country, so I get a reprieve from re-reading at this time. That's all I had at home in the category, even though I have loads of various books that would fit the shelf, they aren't on the shelf... Oh, well, at least I've got one.

I loved The Time Traveller's Wife too. Warning, it takes a while to get into it.

I'm choosing Outlander. It was recommanded by a friend.

Hi everyone. I just joined the group. It sounds interesting as I am a rather ecclectic reader already. I'm going to read "Dark Star Safari" this month, about traveling from one tip of Africa to the other. then I can share it with my Africa discussion group as well. If I have time I will move on to "Round Ireland with a Fridge". It sounds quirky and fun. Don't know if I will get to both though (or even finish the first) as work keeps me really busy, both my kids are in baseball right now,AND I read really slow. Please don't kick me out of the group! :)

I am new to this group and Lynne is my sister. She is also new, but found this group and invited me. Like her, I am a rather eclectic reader. My book for this month is Fried Eggs with Chopsticks. It sounds like it will be humorous, which peaks my interest. I read A Walk Through the Woods years ago and loved it. In addition I have read Outlander and loved it. I will also have to try the Time Traveller's Wife.

Seems like I'm the only person in this group who doesn't know how to spell eclectic! Now you know why I am a math teacher. BEt everyone is wondering why there are 2 sisters named Lyn and Lynne. It's a long story. :)

I forgot that it would show up, silly me. Anyway, since the cat is out of the bag, I'll let you in on the story. My mother has always liked the name Lynne so when I was born, she wanted to name me Lynette and call me Lynne. Unfortunately, my father did not like the name Lynette, so they settled on Carolyn, thinking they would shorten it to Lynn. Well, as fate would have it, no one in my family called me anything but Carolyn, so when my little sis came around Mom decided to get it right this time and actually named her Lynne. The weird thing is that at about that time I started school, hated the name Carolyn (in fact most people don't even know that is my formal name) and started asking people to call me Lyn (I don't like Carol either). SO there you have it, the long version. FYI- my parents and brother never switched to Lyn, and my sis calls me Care so that is how we keep it clear. So now that you know my life history, I am really looking forward to reading the book I picked for this month. I just ordered it from the library and should get it in a few days.

Finished A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail and totally enjoyed it. I learned a lot about the Trail and really have to give Bryson and his buddy credit for what they did! Not this girl!

I have read A Walk in the Woods a couple of years ago so I'll be reading In a Sunburned Country for this month's read. I love Bryson's style and travel books are always so much fun! Great shelf choice.

Thanks to everyone for their support in my shelf choice. I knew Travel books might be difficult for some to get but I wanted to pick a shelf that would still allow for some personal preference. I hope everyone enjoys their books : )
