Liz M 10.6 - For the Ides of March:, read a book that is shelved as "murder" at least 5 times, but is not located in the Mystery section at BPL. So, The Lovely Bones (890 Lexile) works, but The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo does not work.

~grin~ Me too. I became attached to this task & when we saw that the tasks submitted by finishers were too similar to the other potential moderator's task, I nominated this one.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2599 comments So does Perfume: Story of a Murderer count? :) I am reading that now.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Jayme(the ghost reader) wrote: "So does Perfume: Story of a Murderer count? :) I am reading that now."

Yes, it does.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2599 comments yay! I been trying to find a place for it in this challenge.

Rosemary | 4320 comments Wow, I never expected so many books to fit this task! Here's what I have on my TBR:

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (shelved 36 times)]
Along Came a Spider by James Patterson (31)
A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin (18)
The White Tiger by Aravind Adiga (8)
Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon (7)
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle (7)
The Little Friend by Donna Tartt (7)

I also noticed one of the group reads on the list: The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux (7)

Rebekah (bekalynn) I'm not sure I really know how to find out how books are shelved. When you go to the link, is it the blue words under subject? What if there is more than one?
For instance I was looking up The Stranger Beside Me: Ted Bundy The Shocking Inside Story by Ann Rule
So is it shelved under criminals, serial murders, biography?

Elizabeth (Alaska) In the task, Liz has provided a link to the Murder shelf listings. Is that what you mean? That book will work for this task, by the way.

Scroll down to the "location" section:
https://catalog.brooklynpubliclibrary...
For this book the location is "Central SST Non-Fic" and the call # (Dewey decimal #) is 364.1523 R.

If it was shelved in the mystery section, the word mystery would show up either in the location column or the call # column, as seen for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo:

Rebekah (bekalynn) ok thanks! Is there a link to the Dewey Decimal System?

Elizabeth (Alaska) In the lower section of the book information page at BPL is the shelf information used for this task and in the scorekeeping database. There are 3 columns: Location, Call#, Status. This is the area that will be helpful to you in determining whether a book qualifies for this task, or any task in RwS.

But you can always come to the help thread if you're unsure.

Liz M Rebekah wrote: "ok thanks! Is there a link to the Dewey Decimal System?"

I am not sure what you are asking. You can search books by "call #" in the BPL catalog. Searches default to "keyword" but call # is an option in the drop-down box. Once you have found a specific non-fiction book, if you click on the call number in the results, it will display all the books with the same call #. (But they seem to be experiencing difficulties with that function this morning).

If you want to find out what the category/subject is for a specific call #, I usually google Dewey decimal & the first three digits of the call number (ie Dewey decimal 364)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Thanks, it's just I don't know what all the numbers stand for.
Sorry. I think I am one of the few members here that is not a librarian or English major and somehow that info never sunk in. I am good at giving shots and drawing blood and distracting kids when I do it. (smile)

I can't remember half the time what the call numbers mean either. But I've learned that most of the time I don't need to know, as I don't browse by that number in a catalog. You can, however, if you find a book that looks interesting, but not quite right. The thing with this task is that it has to be on the GR list.

message 18: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) ok. I think it dawned on me that any number might work as long as it didn't have "mystery" on any of the branch locations and involved murder., AmI right?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rebekah wrote: "ok. I think it dawned on me that any number might work as long as it didn't have "mystery" on any of the branch locations and involved murder., AmI right?"

Yes, if you're checking a book that is on the GR list that has been shelved at least 5 times.

message 21: by Bea (new)

Bea So The Name of the Rose would not work since one location at BPL lists it as mystery, but The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time would work with a Lexile of 1180. Correct?

Elizabeth (Alaska) Bea wrote: "So The Name of the Rose would not work since one location at BPL lists it as mystery, but The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time would work with a Lexile of 1180. Correct?"

Yes.

Karen Michele Burns (klibrary) | 5291 comments Also, for anyone who hasn't read it or wants to re-read The Postman Always Rings Twice works and it's a group read for the SRC if you are in both groups.

And thanks to all that are posting lists -- very helpful!

message 24: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments From what I can tell, A Clash of Kings, also works for this task. 7 people have shelved it as "murder".

Elizabeth (Alaska) Yes, that George R.R. Martin series qualifies for this task.

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Oh, I know! My husband and I have watched the series since it first came out and I was utterly speechless at the end of the first season!!

Now, I'm trying to read through them and looking forward to getting to book 3 since I'm now refusing to watch the new season until I read the book. ;)

hehehe, the body count will definitely go up in the third one.

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Oh no!!! And knowing how George RR Martin works, I'm sure it will include some of my favorite characters.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2599 comments I don't want to ruin it for you but you will know when it happens.

Elizabeth (Alaska) Don (The Book Guy) wrote: "I checked BPL and couldn't find that Rebecca was listed as mystery, but I'd appreciate someone double checking for me. No rush. Working on several other books."

Yes, that book qualifies for this task.

message 34: by Isabell (new)

Isabell (purzel) | 255 comments Would The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins work?

It is shelved 6 times as murder. When I first looked for a book to fit this task it seemed to fit because the BPL entry I looked at hasn't shelved the book as mystery. But then I listened to the book and it seemed very mystery-like to me so I decided to double-check the BPL-entry and found this last entry (one out of four) for the book that shelves the book in the mystery section.

So what entry counts to determine the shelving at BPL? Do you look at the first entry that comes up on the search result page or is the book disqualified once any entry mentions a myster-shelving?

I don't really mind either way, I'll easily find another book for the task; just want to check whether the book works before posting it.

The Moonstone is on our list and you can read it for this task. It's quite possible my eyes were glazing over when I compiled the list and missed that one shelving. Keep in mind this is a YA Assignment book and has a Lexile of 780, so no styles.

ETA: Too early. This is on the canon, so disregard my comment about YA and Lexile. All styles allowed.

Camille I am reading Naked in Death by J.D. Robb and looking for combo points.

Would this qualify for 10.6? Here's the BPL link:

Thanks!

I don't see a mystery listing at BPL and it's shelved 10 times as murder. Looks good to go, Camille. Enjoy!

message 41: by Deedee (new)

Deedee | 2287 comments Sharp Objects counts too -- BPL lists it as Fiction, and Goodreads has it as Murder 21 times.

Rebekah (bekalynn) never mind. I think it does. Listed under "Murder" 8 times

Elizabeth (Alaska) Rebekah wrote: "does If I Did It: Confessions of the Killer by O.J. Simpson work for this task?"

Yes, that book works for this task.
