What are some of your favorite book covers?

Least favorite covers?

Have you ever bought a book based off the cover alone?

Was there a book with a cover you hated but loved the book anyway?

What do you think of cover changes mid-series?

I bought Everneath (Everneath, #1) by Brodi Ashton almost completely based off the fact that the cover is gorgeous! Although I still haven't read it :-/

I did judge the Vampire Academy book by their covers. I thought they looked really cheesy until I kept hearing great things about them. I gave them a try and I loved them!

I wanted to read The Selection based off the cover and I didn't really like it. I also read As I Wake based off the cover and didn't like it either :-/

I absolutely hate mid-series cover changes because if I already bought the book I get so made that they won't match!

message 3: by Fifth Horseman (new)

Fifth Horseman (fifthhorseman) The first thing that comes to mind is Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor and Days of Blood & Starlight (Daughter of Smoke and Bone, #2) by Laini Taylor
I mean, just look at them! Shmexy :)
I bought it based on its cover and it turned out great for me :)

Now, hate's a pretty strong word. But I was pretty put off by this cover:
Storm (Elemental, #1) by Brigid Kemmerer . I got it as an e-book. It's just meh. What is he doing? He's just standing there staring ominously into the camera. ... I repeat, meh

And yes, changing the covers mid-series always annoys me. Case and point: Isla and the Happily Ever After. This is coming out soon and I've got the first two books and they changed the whole series so now it won't match dangit!
Anna/Lola/Isla: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins Lola and the Boy Next Door by Stephanie Perkins Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins

message 4: by Matea (new)

Matea C (unicornsareinjoy) | 2 comments I did read Everneath. It was... okay, I guess. Original plot, interesting characters, and I actually liked Cole. And, Vampire Academy is definitely my favorite series. Didn't read The Selection, though.

YUCK!!!!! I HATE the new covers for Anna/Lola/Isla

So plain!!!!!!

message 6: by Matea (new)

Matea C (unicornsareinjoy) | 2 comments The Bite Before Christmas I hate this one, even though I love part Jeaniene Frost. It's good to read (if you're Night Huntress fan).
Other book cover I hate are The Demon Trapper's Daughter, Grave Witch, Glass Houses, Moon Called, and $hitload of others.
Though, all these books are good to read. I enjoyed them all, especially Grave Witch.

message 7: by Emily (new)

Emily (treestumpsemily) Not going to lie, I bought Hate List by Jennifer Brown , Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway , and Vampire Academy (Vampire Academy, #1) by Richelle Mead all based on their cover(s) alone. And now Hate List and Audrey, Wait! are two of my all-time-favorite-stand-alone-book(s) ever and Vampire Academy is in my top 5 favorite book series.

message 8: by Preethi (last edited Mar 03, 2013 03:50PM) (new)

Preethi (itsmepreethi) I bought Tiger's Curse (The Tiger Saga, #1) by Colleen Houck and The Selection (The Selection, #1) by Kiera Cass based on their covers and they were both AMAZING!!

On the other hand, Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor had a sort-of beautiful cover and I absolutely abhorred it :( Defiance (Defiance, #1) by C.J. Redwine had a beautiful cover, and I hated that book too.

Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles, #1) by Melina Marchetta didn't have a great cover or anything, but the book was actually pretty good. Same with To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and The Crucible by Arthur Miller . I guess it mostly happens with the classics :/

Changing covers mid-series is horrible 'cause it doesn't look like it belongs to the series that it DOES belong to. For example:
The Name of the Star (Shades of London, #1) by Maureen Johnson and The Madness Underneath (Shades of London, #2) by Maureen Johnson AND ALSO Awakening (Lily Dale, #1) by Wendy Corsi Staub , Believing (Lily Dale, #2) by Wendy Corsi Staub , Connecting (Lily Dale, #3) by Wendy Corsi Staub , and then... Discovering (Lily Dale, #4) by Wendy Corsi Staub

Whether or not it works out for me though, I will always choose books based on their covers...it's a habit. I mean...when you check out books at the library, it's their covers that grab your attention, right?

message 9: by Jessica ♡. (new)

Jessica ♡. well i only can think in this!!!!!!! City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments #5) by Cassandra Clare

message 10: by Doruntina (new)

Doruntina | 67 comments I absolutely loved the cover of Daughter of Smoke & Bone (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #1) by Laini Taylor but i still cant finish reading it. I didnt really like the book covers of Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost (i dont like the girl on them) but i LOVED the books. I have bought Half-Blood (Covenant, #1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout because the color is my favorite but it turned out really great for me.

message 11: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (waterspout) | 370 comments The Iron King (The Iron Fey, #1) by Julie Kagawa Love the book covers and the story! Julie Kagawa is such a lucky author to get such wonderful covers!
Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) by Beth Revis I didn't really like the books, but its not that I hate them either. However, the covers look really good! (until they changed it ofc)..
Shadow Heir (Dark Swan, #4) by Richelle Mead Love this cover! The series' other covers are okay, but I really like this one!
The Angel Experiment (Maximum Ride, #1) by James Patterson Max!! <3
The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden, #1) by Julie Kagawa I didn't particularly like the first cover but WTF is that new cover!!
Fallen (Fallen, #1) by Lauren Kate I bought the whole Fallen series in hardcover solely because I love the covers. Seriously, the books were badly written (for me) and I can't read any of the books for more than 4 hours at a time.
Wondrous Strange (Wondrous Strange, #1) by Lesley Livingston Got this when I was still new to reading and I remember thinking that the first part was slow. The ending was fast-paced, however it ended too abruptly. :C Really like the cover though!
Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1) by Melissa Marr Ugh where do I start? I bought this book along with Ink Exchange because the covers are so amazing! Also the texture of the books were finee. But omg the story...so screwed up! I can't bring myself to like the story. Ever.
Shatter Me (Shatter Me, #1) by Tahereh Mafi Great background for the cover, but I don't like the model. Still I ended up really liking the story!

Mid-series cover changes should be banned.

Erika Rominger | 28 comments I always look at the covers! I chose The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer because of the cover. And I am glad that I did. GREAT BOOK!

message 16: by Erin (new)

Erin Richards (erinrichards) | 4 comments I pick up books based on the cover's appeal, however, I won't buy a book solely based on the cover. I have way too many books to read and not enough time, so I'm super selective. Plus, there's just categories of books I won't read no matter how beautiful or hot a cover is.

message 17: by Kaitlin (new)

Kaitlin (KaitlinJade) | 4 comments My favourite book cover is The divers by Libba Bray.
I hate the cover for The Time of my Life by Cecelia Ahern, but enjoyed the book.
I mostly get a book based on the cover, unless I have heard really good things about it.

message 18: by Marta (new)

Marta Tandori (marta_tandori) | 2 comments If an author I love has a new book out, I'll buy it because I love the author but if I'm in "browse" mode, I'm usually attracted to a book based on (i) cover first (ii) then story and finally (iii) title.

When I had originally commissioned the cover for my book TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE, I gave the company a short synopsis of the book and they then prepared the cover. I absolutely hated it!! It seemed more appropriate for a video game like Grand Theft Auto than Hollywood. When I told the company that, I also sent them a few pictures to give them a visual sense of where I wanted them to go with my cover and I fully expected them to simply "rework" the old one.

Instead what I got was a brand new cover that totally combined all of the elements I was looking for. I was thrilled because the cover combined the major elements of the story: an attractive young woman, a necklace, a dead body on the road and a Hollywood street. From my viewpoint as an author, I thought it was perfect. As a reader, it also appealed to me. What do you think? Too Little, Too Late by Marta Tandori

message 19: by joanne (new)

joanne (cabeswaters) A lot of paranormal romance has excellent covers but terrible books...
Switched (Trylle, #1) by Amanda Hocking Wicked Lovely (Wicked Lovely, #1) by Melissa Marr Hush, Hush (Hush, Hush, #1) by Becca Fitzpatrick
But sometimes the books are good...
Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater Small Blue Thing (Small Blue Thing, #1) by S.C. Ransom The Hollow (The Hollow, #1) by Jessica Verday

I do judge books by their cover... For example I wouldn't read this
The Book of Lies by James Moloney but read it when I saw this cover The Book of Lies by James Moloney . It turned out pretty disappointing though. I normally will pick books off a shelf based on spine, blurb then cover.

On goodreads the default cover is normally US, yet in Australia we get UK or Australian covers which can sometimes be completely different.

Lilzgold | 13 comments "What do you think of cover changes mid-series?"

If I'm only borrowing the books from the library, I don't mind at all. But when I'm actually buying and collecting the books in a series, cover changes become my pet peeve. I go out of my way to make sure they all match.

No book covers come to mind for being beautiful or ugly, but I do remember my old school librarian commenting that Pretties (Uglies, #2) by Scott Westerfeld was ugly looking and that she'd rather recommend the book my friend was reading, which had a nicer cover.

message 21: by Jeff (new)

Jeff Dawson How is this for a book cover. Do to its controversial message, I was forced to have it re-vamped (yes, that's a play on words). Thoughts and comments.

Kristen Pham (kristen_pham) | 1 comments I always loved the original Twilight Cover with the apple. I picked that book up for its cover before it ever became popular.

It's funny that this topic is coming up right now, because I'm trying to decide on which cover to use for the book I wrote, which is a YA fantasy called into the dark. I'm having a vote on my blog about which cover I should choose, and I'd love to know which one you think I should pick. If you're interested, you can check it out here. http://conjurors.wordpress.com

Pamela (waterspout) | 370 comments Jeff- I don't like your cover. I'm not sure what your book is all about, but it's terrifying and I really dislike scary covers. However it was very effective in showing me that the book is about a vampire and the Nazis.

Kristen- I voted on your blog ^_^ Option B seems a little too historic, and option C just doesn't work out. Option A is neat, simple, and nice to look at. Although I suggest font style and color change because it does make the book cover look too simple. It would also be great to add a tagline so that people who see it won't just say, "oh that's sci-fi" or anything like that.

Good morning Pamela, Didn't mean to scare you. The book follows the exact history of WWII from Sept 1, 1939 to June 22nd 1941. The Germans invade Poland, then the SS units start rounding up and shipping off those they deem undesirable. What they don't realize is they are stealing the food supply of two warring vampire clans. Will the clans continue to fight among themselves, or will they unite and take on an opponent more evil than themselves: The Third Reich? That's it in a nutshell. This is the new cover Occupation by Jeff Dawson

message 25: by Pamela (new)

Pamela (waterspout) | 370 comments Oh! That's way better than the first, although I really don't like all the blood pouring from the vampires' teeth. It might be interesting to read. ;) Are the vampires bad? Because I grew up loving them lolol (#Twilight)

Jeff Dawson Pamela wrote: "Oh! That's way better than the first, although I really don't like all the blood pouring from the vampires' teeth. It might be interesting to read. ;) Are the vampires bad? Because I grew up loving..."

They are a mix. One clan, the Romanovs is very warlike and barbaric. They are always trying to keep the upper hand in all ventures. The Boirarksy clan is much more reserved and cautious. They are the thinkers. The female vampires are very strong-willed and driven. Svetlana Romanov (the original cover) is a very conniving, deceitful woman trying to wrestle control of the clan from her overbearing husband, Nikoli. Think of this as a very intense "Dark Shadows" soap opera. Some of the vampires (Nikoli) you will hate. I know I did when I wrote him. Others, are much more likable. But in the end, they are fighting a force more evil than they have encountered over their centuries of existence. Is the book violent in places? Yes. Is there a small love story embedded? Yes. Nicole and Dmitri are chosen to "meld" the clans.

Okay, back on point. Are the vampires bad? I'll leave that up to the readers. Since they are taking on the Third Reich, the answer would have to be yes.

I didn't quite like the covers of Vampire Academy and I thought, ugh a dark book again about vampires and stuff but then my friend persuaded me to read it... and I liked it. =))

Inheritance by Lisa Forrest. I was surprised that the book didn't have a profile on Goodreads with the synopsis and so on, so I made one for it and I would ask that any Goodreads librarians would look through and edit anything I might of missed out on. It was published by HarperCollins Australia and it doesn't sound that bad. Thanks, Daniel :)

message 39: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (mich_ya_c) | 2 comments I am the worst for buying a book based on it's book cover (and then after the shiny cover wears off after a few seconds I read the summary! lol)

My favourite book covers so far are:

Wake (Watersong, #1) by Amanda Hocking I love the water effect and it looks sharp and professionally done.

Dinner With a Vampire (The Dark Heroine, #1) by Abigail Gibbs The black, white and grey really make it stands out and I love the black rose.

Vampire Knight, Vol. 1 (Vampire Knight, #1) by Matsuri Hino Well it's not my favourite but I'm a big fan of Manga and Anime!

The Orcus Games Mistress V (The Orcus Games Novella Trilogy #2) by Louise Herman Simple but shows you that Mistress V means business!

I always feel bad when I look at book covers and think, 'did you really think that would attract readers?' and I am rarely that harsh but I have found two that I thought exactly that when I saw them.

My worst book covers are:

My Blood Approves (My Blood Approves, #1) by Amanda Hocking This is my personal opinion because I did like the story but the cover is so boring and the title does not exactly stand out.

Truly, Madly, Deeply by Faraaz Kazi I saw this book in one of the YA lists (not sure it is though) and the problem I had with this cover was the title was so small and the background image was so boring (again just my opinion).

message 40: by Haley (new)

Haley | 11 comments When i look for new books to read i try so hard to not look at the cover cause sometimes it makes me not want to read it. I read The Different Girl by Gordon Dahlquist for the cover, and i hated the book. It was a chore to get through that book but i was thinking it has such great potential. So all the ones i really do like : Black City (Black City, #1) by Elizabeth Richards , Altered (Altered, #1) by Jennifer Rush , Dearly, Departed (Gone With the Respiration, #1) by Lia Habel , Wither (The Chemical Garden, #1) by Lauren DeStefano , Splintered (Splintered, #1) by A.G. Howard ,
Need (Need, #1) by Carrie Jones , The Shadow Society by Marie Rutkoski ...
I Don't really have books with covers i don't like, but i forsure dont like covers that have weird looking people on them looking silly. Kinda like Switched but i have a different version of the cover, liked the book but i almost didn't get it cause of the cover.

Kelly (kellymatherly) | 7 comments Ooh, this is my kind of topic. I totally judge a book by it's cover. That's it's selling point. If the cover sucks, are you really going to pick it up and read the blurb? Maybe if it's from an author you like, or a book a friend suggested... but if it isn't any of those, the book's screwed from the beginning.

I totally bought the Selection based on it's cover
