From the review This is a very detailed, deeply honest and extraordinarily sensitive account of the coming of age of a girl (the author Pearl Goodman) in the sixties, in the outskirts of Toronto, Canada. Growing up is seldom a painless proposition and this account is no exception. In this case, the experience was further compounded by the fact that both Pearl’s parents were Jews and had been incarcerees in the concentration camps of World War II.

In 1960, my parents and I were in the audience at The Jack Benny Show in Los Angeles. After the show, we were taken into Benny's makeup room, backstage; this was arranged by my uncle, who appeared in over 250 Hollywood films and TV shows. During our conversation with Benny, we learned that his mother and my maternal grandmother were cousins, living not far apart in Russia. For some of us Jews, it's a truly small world.
