I don't know whether you're interested in juvenile fantasy beyond Harry Potter, but if so you might try The Bartimaeus Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud. The first book is "The Amulet of Samarkand." Or if you like fantasy that's off-the-wall (but with some interesting ideas) try Terry Pratchett, especially the Night Watch books, starting with "Guards! Guards!"
The Thirteenth Tale!
It's a truly wonderful tale. Pick it up in the bookstore, read the first page, and I bet you'll get hooked.

I'm about to start Blood and Thunder The Epic Story of Kit Carson and the Conquest of the American West by Hampton Sides. If you're interested in the history of the American West.
