Shawn | 287 comments Best fiction book: Pirate Cinema by Cory Doctorow
Best nonfiction book: The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot by Robert Macfarlane

Not a large selection to choose from this year. I feel a little weird giving Doctorow a win, since all of his books are pretty much identical. But they're never bad, and if I were to recommend just one (and I do recommend only reading one), it would be Pirate Cinema. I found the characters and world to be the most engaging of any of his novels, and the plot was ... well, exactly as engaging as ever.

As for The Old Ways, there were long sections of the book that I didn't really care for, but the book as a whole was the most inspiring I've read in a long time. So I think I'll feel pretty good about recommending this once I have the perspective of hindsight.
