This thread is for discussing Dystopian and Paranormal novels and authors. What is your favourite Dystopian book? What Paranormal authors do you like?

message 2: by Caitlin (new)

Caitlin | 8 comments I LOVE dystopian novels so would be super keen to hear of some of the good ones others have read!

I have said this elsewhere but Oryx and Crake and The Year of the Flood (Margaret Atwood) are both excellent. I also enjoyed Wool Omnibusalthough I think the book doesn't quite live up to how good the concept is.

Sadie (saydeefizz) | 1 comments My favorite Dystopia novel is Delirium
as for Paranormal, I don't really have a favorite quite yet...

message 4: by Dustin (new)

Dustin I love a good dystopian story, as well!

I read THT for school many years ago, and then I chose it for one of my college essays a year later.

Even so, I don't remember very much from it aside from the overall premise. I guess I should get around to re-reading it...

Caitlin | 8 comments I read THT at high school, despite my English teacher telling me it was probably not suitable for a 15yo. I absolutely loved it, and still do despite it being a long time since I read it. I love how Margaret Atwood's books have such a lasting impression so long after you've read them and forgotten the specifics of the story

message 9: by Ohdie (new)

Ohdie right now im reading The Old City (City of Whispers, #2) by Katherine Sorin its pretty good :) its the sequel of City of Whispers (City of Whispers, #1) by Katherine Sorin and I have to say I like it so far! Dystopian+ Paranormal

- I have been wanting to read Oryx and Cake is it that good?

Ali | 163 comments Did anyone read Allie Condie's trilogy??? Matched (Matched, #1) by Ally Condie

I found that really quite fascinating!

message 13: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Nope, I haven't read that series yet, Ali, but it's high on my TBR list because it looks like a good one!

message 14: by Ali (new)

Ali | 163 comments I really enjoyed it, I felt it had a different twist. Really good ideas, could have done with better editing if I recall but that doesn't usually bother me. Xx

message 15: by Cherrelle (new)

Cherrelle Smith (spoonary) Ooooh, you've made me want to read it even more now! xD

message 16: by Ali (new)

Ali | 163 comments Lol!!! I had to pre order the last one, hated waiting!!

Let me know what you think when you get around to reading it :)

message 17: by Ali (new)

Ali | 163 comments And... If you have any favourites please recommend them. I'm quite new to the dystopian scene xx

message 18: by April (new)

April (ajoys) Added Matched to my TBR, my niece gave it 5 stars and my sister gave it 4.

message 19: by BattyKat (new)

BattyKat (prosserkat) I've read the series. I liked it. I think Hunger Games was my first true dystopian series. I think.

I'm almost new the genre. It sure has taken over, it seems!

I read quite a bit of fantasy and as a kid, there was no genre for Dystopian. Mostly, if it was set in the future, it was post-apocalyptic, of varying degrees.

message 22: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan I have not read many Dystopian novels. But among the ones that I had read Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale was the best.

message 23: by BattyKat (new)

BattyKat (prosserkat) I haven't read those, or Handmaid's Tale, yet.

On my list!

I read it but I don't think Ill continue on with it... for dome reason Matched and Delirium (Delirium, #1) by Lauren Oliver are on my no-continue list IDK why? maybe its cause I was reading Uglies (Uglies, #1) by Scott Westerfeld at the time

message 25: by Hedvig (last edited Jun 15, 2013 10:14PM) (new)

Hedvig | 13 comments I really love dystopian novels, but I am still quite new to the genre. I love Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and the follow up After the Flood. I also loved A Handmaid´s Tale. 1984, Brave New World and a swedish novel by Karin Boye Kallocain by Karin Boye . One of my all time favorites is Mara and Dann by Doris Lessing. Does anyone know of similar novels? I would love to find some new favorites!

Daniel Lewis | 3 comments Just finished reading Article 5 by Kristen Simmons, amazing book.

message 27: by Riya (new)

Riya I need to read that one Daniel!! I now help moderate Jack's YA Dystopian Club so I obviously love them! My favorites are Divergent, Legend, the Maze Runner, and tons tons more!

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) "The Chemical Garden" trilogy by Lauren Destefano was really good. I think the dystopian world she has created is an unnerving one, and rather bleak.

Bob Collopy (bobcollopy) | 8 comments I’ve been a quiet participant/observer of the group for a while. Because I love you all, I’d like to give you the chance to read an ARC of my book, The Phoenix Cycle.

It’s a dystopian postapocalyptic where New San Francisco is the only known city left on the planet that is still surviving the nightly ash storms. They survived by putting the American dream on steroids and have become ruthless in the process. You can get a taste of this new and warped world by watching the official book trailer below:

https://youtu.be/JVm1R6nUVjE

(This trailer was featured in a multinational event where over 100 Indie theaters screened the 1984 movie on April 4th to protest George Orwell’s realization of “Alternative Facts,” in the government.)

You will get a few other unique elements with this story:

-Every main character is secretly based on a philosopher or philosophy, but it still reads like a fictional book. So it becomes a bloody revolution of ideas. A chapter of the book has been used by the philosophical departments of Universities in Britain.

-Includes a timely prediction of what could happen if virtual reality became a form of subsidized housing by the government in order keep people complacent and housed in a more cost effective manner.

Some Beta Love:

“the book was actually really good.” - #17 Best Reviewer on Goodreads
“(The) world-building is awesome” - Hillary M.
“I think it has great potential.” -Marcus
