The Secret of Ella and Micha discussion

So I read this a week ago and I cant even remmember what the secret was.

What was it?

I dont think it was a secret so much as it was a traumatic event that changed her.

major spoilers ahead. be warned.

(view spoiler)[First, there was that night where Ella was supposed to be watching her Mom (because her Mom has some mental condition that I can't remember the name of atm) but instead she goes off to do something else and when she comes back she finds her mom dead in the tub with blood everywhere.

Second, after her mother's death Ella is in bad shape and blames herself for not being there and taking care of her mom so she goes to a party and gets drunk then gets a guy to drive her out to the bridge and leave her there. Micha finds her at this bridge as she's standing on the edge of it because she wanted to see if she could fly like her mom thought she could. Basically, she was on the verge of killing herself and Micha talks her out of it. That same night, Ella and Micha kiss and he tells her how he feels about her which scares her away. Ella goes off to college and cuts off contact from everyone until she has to return in the summer because she has no where else to go. (hide spoiler)]

I think the second one is the "secret" but really it was more like something that happened that Ella didn't want to deal with

I don't think many people knew about her mom. I think it was just Ella, her family, and Micha.
The bridge thing I'm pretty sure only Ella and Micha knew about.

Im still confused. so thats the reason she left in the beginning?

I think she left because she felt guilty about her mom and she didn't want to deal with it. She felt like if she was there she would be reminded of her mom all the time. Micha also served as a reminder but she also didn't want to deal with the thing that happened on the bridge. She was basically overwhelmed by everything and dealt with it by running away from her problems.

I wondered the same thing after reading this book, the title was catchy (and it seems to be the author's self-identifier...The Secret of...The Forever of...The Coincidence of...The Redemption of...) BUT it didn't jump out as obvious either. After thinking on it I decided that The Secret of Ella and Micha was that she loved him, because the entire book seemed to be the initial denial and then slow revelation for Ella that Micha was more than a friend. When she finally tells Micha she loves him, he says "I know, you told me that night on the bridge" and we learned that the night on the bridge didn't just end where Ella remembers it ending, but there was more that happened after they left the bridge, so Ella is essentially being let in on the secret her mind kept from her. Dunno, but that's how I worked it out for myself!

I agree with your interpretation. I guess I was thinking about the secret that Ella was keeping as opposed to the secret that the title was referring to.
The secret could be the truth about their relationship. That it means more that what both of them initially thought it did.

I also think the title means that it is "their" secret. that they are just "made for one another" "drawn to each other" each . . .

I think the secret is that they love each other. I mean, if you've been best friends with someone your whole life it may be awkward to finally admit to yourself that you are in love with this person. You risk losing a friendship that you cant live without if things don't work out.

In my opinion the 'secret' is what happened on the bridge. He found her right before she tried to kill herself, so I think that the secret is that she tried to kill herself on that bridge when he found her. I don't think that anyone else knew that she tried to take her life that night.

I thought the "secret" was that she told him she loved him the night at the bridge. She was so out of it that she didn't remember. And I think Micha told Grady about it. Grady said something to Ella about it and said she would remember when she was ready (or something like that).
