Okay to sum it up, Book was so confusing and different then the television show but that's how the producers wanted it. Same characters, same back story, different plot. I don't want to say the book sucked but I just thought the T.V. shows plot was better and more vampire-ish.
I think the books are better. I never really got into the tv series.

@Beatrice yes I've heard a lot of people say that! All the guys are yummy on that show. Hottest cast hands down

Agree with this. It's not even necessary to read the books because the show is only loosely based on them. But if you do plan to read them in the future I'd suggest only reading the first four. The books after that, called The Return Series, are too confusing. I couldn't even understand what the heck I was reading half the time.
I have only seen the fourth season and the TV series is better. Plus because I read the books I have an idea of what happened. Plus my friend ruins every episode if I don't watch it in time. Do I know what happened on season 1-3

The first 4 books were good, the rest of the books seems dragging and it was written by this pseudo-author and uses L.J. Smith's name.
The books weren't written by her anymore. TV show was way better.
