I'm struggling to think of many for this one. What's the consensus on non-fiction that takes place before 1800 (American Revolution?)

Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean Auel
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon
Those come to mind off the top of my head.

I recently listened to 1776 and really enjoyed it.
Nobody said the books had to be fiction. But I can recommend Scandalmonger by the late William Safire.

You could read any of the classic Greek tragedies (Oedipus, Antigone, Medea). Additionally, Nostradamus' prophecies would work too, there are thousands of books written that have translated his prophecies and discussed their meanings.
One book I loved comes from Japan. It's like a combination of Harriet the Spy meets courtesan blogger, but from 1002 or so. Highly recommended, and reads quickly despite being around 300 pages. The Pillow Book
