Wendy | 259 comments He is a worrie to me. I think that he could become a real problem in the future, but then again he may become a help to them. It will be interesting to see what happens with him.

When he makes a pass at Claire at the wedding I certainly didn't like him. But Jamies reaction to the situation was a little high handed too. He basically blamed Claire for going to the stables with Wylie and therefore it was her fault that he made a pass at her. I suppose that he was jealous, but he isn't overly jealous at other times. Hmmmmmm....

message 3: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments I can't decide whether to think Mr. Wylie is just a young rogue, or a Claire molester. Hahaha. Maybe he's both.

He's a kind of naughty, interesting fellow who managed to outfox Jamie. How he got out of that room without being seen, I don't know. Jamie got his horse (later stolen by Bonnett) and he had a go at Claire. Maybe a tit-for-tat in his mind. Claire not entirely unintrigued by his skill. But Claire has her naughty side as well, although I'm sure she'd have kicked Wylie in the face had she been entirely sure it was he in the dark. Maybe.

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments What book was that in? and do you remember when Jamie and Claire and the gang were at River Run, I think at Jocasta's wedding??? Who was it that snuck in and sexually had his way with Claire in the dark??? I was probably reading to fast and missed the specifics.
Is this the incident you are referring to?

message 5: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments I believe it was in The Fiery Cross.

Yes, I'm talking about the incident with Claire at the wedding. Claire smelled rice powder, which the dandy Mr. Wylie wore.

Somehow I'd thought he'd gotten killed later by either Roger or Jamie, but I read again and he didn't. And that incident was left hanging although it's probably a sure thing that it was Phillip Wylie. The 'puppy' as Claire called him.

message 7: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments why didn't Claire do something? that baffled me If I was uncertain who it was that was invading me...I wouldn't be concerned about waking up other people! like I said I need to reread..but, did she really want it..or did she want to believe it was Jamie?

message 8: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments Claire was spending the time trying to decide if it was or wasn't Jamie. I think a good kick to the face would have revealed the 'who' of it, but the 'who' was apparently doing a good job of it. I'm not sure Claire was of a mind to stop the proceedings. That's what I found a bit odd.

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments That's so funny ! I like how you put that!! my thoughts exactly!!

message 10: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments It was only hinted that it was Wylie in thee dark. Mayybe there will be a reference in the new book, I hope. I don't think his dealings are over with Bonnet, so I think we will see him in Echo.

message 11: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments so do you think Bonnet is still alive??? or maybe EITB will have lots of ghosts running around?

message 12: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments No I think that Bonett is dead. Bree helped out with that. But someone will take over the smuggling. so we'll see.

message 13: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Cynthia wrote: "so do you think Bonnet is still alive??? or maybe EITB will have lots of ghosts running around?"

Bonnett is definitely dead. I don't remember what happened to Wylie or if we even know. It will be interesting to see what new characters show up in Echo in the Bone and which evil ones come back from the past.

message 14: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments yeah! It didn't really way about Wylie. So we'll see.

message 15: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments I think the last we see of Wylie is at the landing. When they're searching for the escaped boars. As far as I can tell he wasn't mixed up in Jamie and Roger being attacked there. He just sort of goes away. Although it's interesting that those horses Wylie loved were the same kind of horses that were running free at Bonnett's house.

Wendy | 259 comments I didn't get the impression that they were the same at all. The one's on the Island where Bonnet's house was were wild, left from the spanish. Bree said that while looking out of the window at Bonnet's house.

You may be right that we won't see him again, but with the war, who knows.

message 17: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments Hhmm I thought the horses were wild as well..I need to go reread that part...boy, I never knew how much I missed the first go around until I go back and take a second look. It's because of discussions like this that bring things to light that otherwise I might have missed altogether! I really love hearing everyone's thoughts!!!
Anybody out there want to go to Scotland with me???

message 18: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments Haha, I'm on about my seventh or eighth read of the series. And I still find things that I didn't notice before! Diana packs a LOT into one book.

I didn't mean we won't see him again. I meant the 'last' we saw of him in the current books. He's alive. He may come back.

Hahaha, even Phillip Wylie, huh? Well, he'd have to have a veeeeery long reach.

I have a very vivid imagination!! I'm trying to think of the least obvious character that Diana could drop on us!!! I tell you...it would not have been even mentioned if there wasn't something to it ( him or her)

message 22: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments would if Loaghaire comes to America??? Maybe Wylie had to go back across the pond for some reason, meets up with L and brings the Wench back??? okay, okay, I need to step away from the books now!!!

message 23: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I thought that Philip Wylie was english, am I wrong on that? So he wouldn't have gone to Scotland.

message 24: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments they were still under the crown right?

message 25: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Yes, they are under English rule at theis point. So I guess it could have been anyone with Laogaire.

message 26: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments I really don't like her..whore!!

message 27: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Mean Whore! I didn't like her at the Castle Leoch. When Claire saw her and Jamie kissing, I thought that she was jealous of Claire and we would see her again, I was right.

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Wendy wrote: "Mean Whore! I didn't like her at the Castle Leoch. When Claire saw her and Jamie kissing, I thought that she was jealous of Claire and we would see her again, I was right."

I wonder what her other daughter has been up to - Marsalie's sister. Maybe it was her that Jenny heard.

message 29: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments I am rereading Outlander and I had to skip over the Jamie kissing Loagwhore part, because it p@$#%#! me off so much!!! HAAAAAAAAAAA
Do you remember what Marsalie's sisters' name is?

message 30: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments hehehehehehehe!

Her name is Joan, and I suppose that it could have been her that Jenny heard.

Well hopefully Jamie will be able to stop paying her alimony. I don't think he should have agreed to that. She did shoot him for heavens sake.

message 33: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments and try to kill Claire....that alimony thing has always made me mad too. I'm surprised Claire didn't put a stop to that!

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Cynthia wrote: "and try to kill Claire....that alimony thing has always made me mad too. I'm surprised Claire didn't put a stop to that! "

At least Jenny was smart enough to make sure that if L married again he wouldn't have to continue paying.

Wendy | 259 comments Cynthia wrote: "Nay, Nay I say....I still think it was the verra wicked wench with someone that will present as a verra big surprise!!! I see you survived Jury duty!!"

I'm surviving Jury Duty just fine. I still have a lot left though. Tomarrow and possibly all of next week. Yuck!

Queen Ugly is definately my bet. She is just mean. She wouldn't want Jamie to stop paying for any reason.

At the end of ABOSAA, Jamie say's they will go to Scotland to get his printing press. So I think there will definately be a confrontation with Queen Ugly. But I wonder if Marsali will go too?

message 36: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments queen ugly..that's hilarious!! I bet Marsali will go along also! I'm not really fond of her, I don't like how she calls Claire, mother Claire. I just don't like anyone I guess who is even remotely related to Loagwhore/Ugly Queen. I want to see Claire open a "can of whoop arse" on her!!

message 37: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Cynthia wrote: "queen ugly..that's hilarious!! I bet Marsali will go along also! I'm not really fond of her, I don't like how she calls Claire, mother Claire. I just don't like anyone I guess who is even remotely..."

I didn't like Marsali at first either. However, it seems like she really grew up after she married Fergus and is really a strong person. She took care of the house, the kids, the land and making the whiskey while Fergus was off galavanting around and feeling sorry for himself. I think she genuinely cares for both Jamie and Claire. I never did like the Mother Claire thing though.

message 38: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments yes I agree, she did have to grow up fast, and I was really disappointed with Fergus and his behavior! It's mentioned that Jamie and Claire possibly go back to Scotland for his printing press..why do you think they feel the need to do that? Fergus is already settled doing the printing gig in the US? Do ya'll think that they will stay in Scotland in Echo and maybe that is why Bree and Rog ended up at LB? pure speculation on my part!!

message 39: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments I've always, to the dismay of my friend, felt sorry for Loaghaire. No, I mean it. Well, I put myself in her shoes. She's young and besotted with Jamie. WHO takes her up to the alcove and snogs her. What's the child to make of that?! I was mad at Jamie for doing that. He's kind of always used her as a backup. His hormones are raging so he's snogging L because Claire isn't showing any signs of wanting snogged. He's lonely after Claire's gone, so he marries L. Both times she gets dumped on her behind when Claire is available.

Frankly, ladies I can see her pov. She's just hot-tempered and I think Jamie toyed with her. Both times. And it bit him in the arse. Don't play with fire Jamie lad. Hell hath no fury...

message 40: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments Well..when you put it that way..so why then, when Claire was thought to be gone for good, didn't she take advantage of her new found opportunity???? It didn't appear that she was soooo into him anymore, he sure wasn't feeling the love.

message 41: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments but ..she did attempt to get Claire burned at the stake!!! Snog or no snog ..that is some hard core revenge!

message 42: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments She couldn't take advantage of Claire being gone because Jamie went into hiding. And she did go for him when he came back from Helwater, with Jenny's help.

Yes, it was some hardcore revenge. Maybe she's just that kinda gal. Plus, for the times, she probably did think Claire something of a witch. Dougal himself said it before he and Jamie fought. They all had a strange feeling about Claire.

I just think, put yourself in L's shoes. Plus Jamie took that beating for her. I'm sure she just thought he hung the moon when he did that, and that he cared for her.

message 44: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I also didn't like Marsali at first, but when Frgus was the whimpy no good, she really showed what she was made of. Whay did Fergus have to be a whimp? He seemed to handle things just fine before they moved to the Ridge. Ian Sr. lost his leg and still handled the work of a farm. Wasn't that an example to him?

The Ugley Queen L is just a mystery to me. I don't understand why she couldn't give Jamie at least a little respect. She acted like she wanted him when he came back from Helwater, but then after they got married she wouldn't have much to do with him. I feel he would have been really patient with her. He was with Bree after her Rape, and with Claire over other things, why not her? He did live in a cave alone for 7 years, and Ardmuir for what 6 yrs? He had shown patience to the inth degree.

Yes, Jamie kinda led her on at Leoch, but never really looked back after he married Claire. I know she was jealous, but WOW talk about over reaction! To have someone burned at the stake?

She really does have quite the jealous hot temper. To have Claire burned at the stake to get Jamie and then when she finally has him why treat him so poorly. He was taking care of her and her daughters. Then to shoot him when Claire came back and say "He is mine!" when he hadn't even been living with her for quite some time. She seems a little bit on the crazy side.

message 46: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments I think she thought things would be different with Claire gone. But once they were married Claire was still with him. She talks about Jamie calling for Claire in his sleep and apparently being very 'excited' when doing that. So...it's the same old thing. Not a good thing for any wife to have to put up with.

Cynthia Hanna-Tarantino (ctara) | 309 comments when Jamie came back and married her, she could have made up for lost time with him....but she didn't and treated him poorly. He wasn't living with her and she probably could have cared less....because she just wanted the money and the support for her daughters. I think she is psycho crazy!! It will be verra interesting to see who she is boinking!!

message 48: by Renee (new)

Renee (nightbird) | 334 comments She really could not. Jamie was still mad for Claire. If a guy's calling for someone else in his sleep? I've always felt for L. She was young and mad about Jamie and Jamie used her as a second-best.

I think sometimes Jamie gets thought of too well where L is concerned. He didn't love her when he married her, he only needed people to take care of. Meh, I guess that might be all right for some women, but I don't blame L entirely. He was unrequited love from the beginning.

message 50: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (les2car) | 131 comments Cynthia wrote: "I think he married L because his sister thought it best."

Yes, I think he married her because Jenny was pushing him too and he didn't know what else to do with himself. I agree that was totally unfair to L. However, I'm not sure she really loved him either. She really did need someone to take care of her and the girls. I think she liked the fact that he wasn't living with her and was just supporting them. Otherwise she would have been nicer when he was there. Marsali said that L wouldn't even let hime touch her. I think she is just crazy jealous of Claire.
