Ian Butler (burgerbardad) | 98 comments It's shameless but I am promoting my book Burger Bar Dad! It's available on amazon and will soon be in the shops!

Here is the blurb:

Paul Castle loves his son Jack and hates being a Burger Bar Dad. Seeing his son only on Wednesdays and Saturdays pulls him apart. His ex-wife is a thrusting ambitious banker and he is a middling, not very ambitious Birmingham journalist with hopes of being a playwright. The divorce gave her the house, and he got the guilt.

He’s just about keeping it together, but after a disastrous parents evening, Paul discovers that Jack's mother is planning to move to London and put Jack in a private boarding school.

Paul must quickly sort his priorities and his life as he embarks on a hilarious campaign to frustrate his ex-wife’s plan. However, his life is just about to get even more complicated, when he meets Gillian and begins to remember the joys of being in love. All too soon, he is confronted with the reality that in order to maintain even his inadequate Burger Bar relationship with Jack, he will have to move down South.

As he falls quickly in love with Gillian, he is then offered the chance to be a playwright in Birmingham. How can he choose between being with Gillian or being with Jack?

Here is a clip from the book which sums it up nicely.....

It’s when you’re inside a place like this at the weekend, that you see them: dads like me, enjoying the last few minutes of their own family life. The Burger Bar Dads, trying to find a space to have some time with their estranged kids.
For me, it’s where I get to hang out with Jack, my son, and have a Mega-Guilty Pleasure Meal with Large Fries. It comes with a free gift of my Ex’s disapproval at us finishing our contact here.
You see every type of dad here, and today’s no different. Over there is Guilty Dad, the one with a face liked a slapped arse, looking like he’s just inherited the national deficit: he’s nearly always on the verge of crying as, after this meal, he has to drop his kids off and spend another evening wondering if he’s done the right thing leaving his wife. Across the way is Indifferent Dad: he is the heartbreaker with the vibrant orange tan, who doesn’t give a crap, and Saturday afternoon with his kids is a drag. He’s looking at his chunky watch to see how much time he has left before he hands them back and can get to the gym. Naturally, I hate guys like this, as you can imagine, and looking away I quickly spot Caring Dad. He’s fussing and over-compensating and can easily become Guilty Dad, if he doesn’t watch himself.
So: the burger bar or the pizza, chicken or ice-cream place. It’s where kids meet and get to know their dad’s new partner, and her kids. It’s also where dads get to find out and be jealous of their ex-partner’s new love interest. It’s where they find out about school and what’s happening at home. If they’re like Caring or Guilty Dad, they’re trying to make the kids understand that in divorcing or leaving their mothers, they weren’t divorcing or leaving them.

hope that makes sense!
