I am undertaking a MA degree in Chinese Literature but I am taking courses from the MA in anthropology and love it. In fact, I am writing my MA thesis with anthropological focus. I am interested in semiotic anthropology, cultural anthropology, and the use of subjectivity in anthropology. In general the postmodern theories in Anthropology seem to me interesting. I joined the group hoping to find interesting discussion and book suggestions!
Try reading FRAGMENTS OF AN ANARCHIST ANTHROPOLOGY by David Graeber,Prickly Paradigm Press, 2004, before you commit too completely to postmodern theory. It's only about 100 pages and will give you lots to think about regarding anthropology as a profession.

I'm getting your suggestion at the library! :)

Hi I'm Jessica - newly graduated from an MA program at George Washington University where I focused on medical anthropology and international development. Currently raising a newborn and a toddler but considering a PhD program. I would really appreciate group discussions to keep me on track with reading anthropology!

Hi, I'm Giskin, just about to embark on a research project looking at the 'rhetoric of gratitude in healthcare' in the UK. I am finding my way around a theoretical structure at the moment - is gratitude best viewed as part of a 'gift economy', or is it a relational network? I'm reading Graeber's 'Toward an anthropological theory of value' and trying to work out why he ignores actor-network theory...
Hi there, I just finished my BA(hons) in anthropology and history and feel like now is the time to read all those 'off-topic' ethnographies I've been waiting to read.

Wow, nice to see so much activity on this site! Im Heather, I finished my PhD in 1999 and have been teaching & researching on issues of develooment, health, gender and indigeneity ever since. I would echo the advice re: reading David Graeber's Fragments, and work on Value, then suggest you move on to read his book on Debt, which re-examines a lot of 'fundamental' anthropological theorizing about social cohesion and exchange systems.
Hi. I am Shoaib. I am a PhD candidate in Human Ecology at AUD in Delhi. Is the group still active? Are there monthly readings, or some collaborative exercise?

Have a lovely day, everyone.
