Yeah, I know this has been done before. But I think that you can really tell a lot about a person by reading their favourite quotes. So 'fess up everybody. What quotes inspired you, made you think, changed your life, or put a smile on your face? Put in at least 3 of them.

message 2: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) You can definitely tell a lot about someone by reading their favorite quotes. I have a quote journal, and I'm almost more reluctant to let people look at it than my actual journal, just because it feels so much more personal. Anyway, my boyfriend needs to use the computer, but when I get back on, I'll post some of mine! =)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Ok, here is one of mine. I'll post more later.

Those quotes are great!

Anna Shumaker (annashu) "Outside a dog, a book is your best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read." Groucho Marx (I'm not really a dog person but I'm a book person and the quote always makes me smile)

"Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature." Tom Robbins

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Here are a few from my book quote journal:

"It amazes me what humans can do, even when streams are flowing down their faces and they stagger on, coughing and searching, and finding."
The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

"Life is pain. Anybody that says different is selling something."
The Princess Bride by William Goldman

"Usually, we walk around constantly believing ourselves. 'I'm okay,' we say. 'I'm alright.' But sometimes the truth arrives on you, and you can't get it off. That's when you realize that sometimes it isn't even an answer-- it's a question. Even now, I wonder how much of my life is convinced."
I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

"Maybe everyone can live beyond what they're capable of."
I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

"If you have some liniment I'll put it on my dignity. I think it's sprained."
A Wrinkle in Time (Time, Book 1) by Madeleine L'Engle

And here are a few that aren't from books:

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love."
-Mother Theresa

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment."
-Ralph Waldo Emerson

"A day without sunshine is like, you know, night."
-Steve Martin

"Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself."

message 13: by Daniel (new)

Daniel | 14 comments This is a quote from Kurt Vonnegut's Mother Night. It's absolutely amazing. It captures what love is like in just two paragraphs.

"My narcotic was what had got me through the war; it was an ability to let my emotions be stirred by only one thing - my love for Helga. The concentration of my emotions on so small an area had begun as a young lover's happy illusion, had developed into a device to keep me from going insane during the war, and had finally become the permanent axis about which my thoughts revolved.

And so, with my Helga presumed dead, I became a death-worshipper, as content as any narrow-minded religious nut anywhere. Always alone, I drank toasts to her, said good morning to her, said good night to her, played music for her, and didn't give a damn for one thing else."

"Rich dreams now which he was loathe to wake from. Things no longer known in the world. The cold drove him forth to mend the fire. Memory of her crossing the lawn toward the house in the early morning in a thin rose gown that clung to her breasts. He thought each memory recalled must do some violence to its origins. As in a party game. Say the word and pass it on. So be sparing. What you alter in the remembering has yet a reality, known or not."

Cormac McCarthy, The Road

message 14: by Nuri (new)

Nuri (nools) | 145 comments Daniel: Almost the entirety of The Road reads like poetry to me. Good quote. : )

And Vonnegut, too! Though I haven't read the work you've cited, I deeply appreciate this sampling of your library.

Kelsey: I didn't know Zusak had other books! From your quotes, I Am The Messenger sounds really interesting. Will look into this.

message 15: by [deleted user] (last edited Apr 09, 2009 01:13AM) (new)

Wow.......the quote by Vonnegut is amazing!

"That is what I have always understood to be the essence of anarchism: the conviction that the burden of proof has to be placed on authority, and that it should be dismantled if that burden cannot be met."
— Noam Chomsky

Fight Club (film):
"When deep space exploration ramps up, it'll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks."

message 16: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey Baguinat (kelseybaguinat) Oh yes. I am the Messenger is amazing! He's got two others besides those two, but one is basically out of print and you can't get it, and the other one is called Getting The Girl.

Emily O (readingwhilefemale) | 487 comments "Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars."
- I forgot who it's by actually. Some book...

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.
-Teddy Roosevelt

Even after all this time, the sun never says to the Earth, "you owe me." Look what happens with a love like that. It lights up the whole sky. - Hafiz

message 19: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments I love when you read a quote and it shakes you with its truth.

Here's three of my all time favorites (but I've got more):

"Here's to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square hole. The ones who see things differently. They're not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do." - Apple Computer Inc.

"How many slams in an old screen door? Depends how loud you shut it. How many slices in a bread? Depends how thin you cut it. How much good inside a day? Depends how good you live 'em. How much love inside a friend? Depends how much you give 'em." - Shel Silverstein

"We lay there and looked up at the night sky and she told me about stars called blue squares and red swirls and I told her I'd never heard of them. Of course not, she said, the really important stuff they never tell you. You have to imagine it on your own." - Brian Andreas

Afaf Alsalmi (al-salmi2008hotmailcom) Hey everyone,
I just read your favorite quotes .I really loved all of them. And I would like to share mine with you.Hope you will like it.

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway.

If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway.

If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway.

The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway.

For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."
— Mother Teresa

message 23: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 378 comments Annashu, so do I. I love how they make me smile, and think, and appreciate life more :).

Al, I love that quote, too. By the time I get to the last line I feel emotion overcome me. It reminds me of another really great quote (albeit with a different tone) by Frederick Douglass:
I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.

I really like that one Ashley--the "Today you are You" one.

I love how Dr. Seuss might have silly rhyming books but he can say the most profound things in a short little rhyme.

Anna Shumaker (annashu) Oh! The Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss was our HS graduation theme, this is the quote that was used most often

You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go."

message 34: by Kimberly (new)

Kimberly (kimberlywithat) | 2140 comments Ok, I pulled this from the Tony's. I fell in love with this quote immediately. It made all my senses tingle with thespian delight. :D

“ The house lights dim, the curtains open and the stage begins to glow. Theaters are shrines. They are mysterious temples brimming with magic. The floorboards are worn down by generations of players. The curtains are imbued with secrets of days gone by. The actors in their quest to create wonder and ignite debate dwell among the great spirits of the past"

"Our plays live in the present, live in the past, and they're also lighthouses for our common future. They stir our thoughts, they throw light, and they connect us."

message 46: by Paul (new)

Paul | 18 comments "All men fear death. It's a natural fear that consumes us all. We fear death because we feel that we haven't loved well enough or loved at all, which ultimately are one and the same. However, when you make love with a truly great woman, one that deserves the utmost respect in this world and one that makes you feel truly powerful, that fear of death completely disappears. Because when you are sharing your body and heart with a great woman the world fades away. You two are the only ones in the entire universe. You conquer what most lesser men have never conquered before, you have conquered a great woman's heart, the most vulnerable thing she can offer to another. Death no longer lingers in the mind. Fear no longer clouds your heart. Only passion for living, and for loving, become your sole reality. This is no easy task for it takes insurmountable courage. But remember this, for that moment when you are making love with a woman of true greatness you will feel immortal." - Ernest Hemingway - (In the movie Midnight in Paris)

I would like to find out if Hemingway actually said this.

“The man who has begun to live more seriously within begins to live more simply without.” - Ernest Hemingway
