I loved this book and am excited to see it as botm. :) It's definitely much darker and grittier than most other UF I've read, but that's kind of part of its appeal.
I gave up waiting for it to be the book of the month. I had started reading it last month. I am almost finished reading it now. I look forward to discussing it.
I totally recommend this book on audio. The narrator is fantastic and makes easy listening out of all the slnag Downside speak. Great start to this series. Love, Love, Love!
The slang was a little hard for me to understand at first but I caught on eventually and I LOVED the story.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I didn't think I'd like the main character, but Chess surprised me. I found her to be sympathetic and I got why she was a drug addict. What I really liked was the plotting and world building. Very rich, and very different from anything else I've read. I also loved some of the secondary characters, particularly Terrible.

I did enjoy the book overall.
It took me a bit to get into this, but after that I really found myself liking the story and the characters. Fun and very different. I look forward to reading the rest of the series :)
I'm officially hooked. I loved the dark, gritty punk rock feel and was surprised that I actually kind of liked drug addict Chess. Terrible is easily my favorite character, and I loved any scene with him. Thanks to your warnings, the slang wasn't so bad with most of the characters. There were a couple of minor characters that I got confused with.
I liked the book... I read a couple of books after I finished reading it earlier this month and now I am starting on the second book. so far so good.
Reading it now. I'm about 5 chapters in. Very well written, interesting world building. Waiting to see where all this is going
ok now i've read 10 chapters and this is beginning to feel like a horror book. I thought it was UF. Before I read more, would somebody please tell me if Unholy ghosts is horror or UF or a mix. IF a mix, how horrible does it get?

The storyline is set smack dab in the middle of drug and gang culture, so there are elements of drug abuse, violence, sexual abuse, witchcraft, sacrifice, etc. And then of course there are ghosts, and in this series the ghosts can kill you.
I would still consider this UF, but like many UF series it is an eclectic mix of different genres including fantasy, romance, scifi, mystery, and yes, a little horror. In terms of how horrible it gets... (view spoiler) But this book never reaches ghost horror level of say, The Shining.
I hope that helps some!
thanks Megan and Jessica. I haven't gotten to the spoiler part you mentioned but the worms really freaked me out. GROSS!
I totally loved this book I don't regret at all that I had to buy this book (since the libraries near me didn't have either of the books of the month) because it was so well written and very well developed characters. I love Chess! I'm totally going to be buying the second one pretty soon, because I definitely like the writing style, characters, and the world.
I read it awhile ago, although it's one of the few that I started and then put down again. After the first chapter, I didn't think I would enjoy it. I was really glad I gave it another try however, since I ended up loving it. It's made it to my top 10 favorite in the genre. Chess and Terrible aren't my normal kind of protagonists, but I found myself invested in them. They live in a dark, broken world. And yet Chess manages to try so hard to do what's right, while dealing with a drug addiction that only gets worse as the series progresses, as well as a really horrific past. Loved this book, love this series, and can't wait to see what's next for the two of them.
I'm having a hard time finishing this one. it seemed like the drug use and drug paraphernalia really got in the way in the beginning-even though, yes it's part ofthe story. I'm only half way through and it does seem to get better, so I'm hoping I'll at least enjoy the last half.
