Another fascinating part of the book was observing the ways the characters related to each other (especially between Miss Pettigrew and the other characters). For example, the central relationship of Miss Pettigrew and Miss LaFosse is quite symbiotic. Miss P loves going to see movies; Miss L looks like a movie star and is a singer. Miss L is not good with confrontation; Miss P will not put up with any nonsense (sometimes with the help of a little alcohol, as Rosemary mentioned!). Miss L is extroverted; Miss P is introverted. There are lots of other examples, but those were the ones that stuck out to me.
Maybe this is a stretch, but it occurred to me that Joe's profession is symbolic in relation to Miss P - he designs women's lingerie, which is worn underneath clothing, and he is willing to draw Miss P out to discover her understated beauty that's below the surface. Any other observations?
