This chapter really reinforced the strong sense of justice of Matty. She sees a man trying to buy some items for his family, and the shop owner will not accept the bank note because the bank is in failure. Even though she had nothing to do with any of it, she pays for the purchases because she's a stockholder of the bank and feels very responsible for the trouble. She gives up her much looked forward to dress.
Really giggled over the fact that Matty catches Miss Pole without her teeth. Yet, the desire to see the newest fashions brings Miss Pole out into town without them. Vanity overcomes pride.
Matty also realizes in this chapter that even "unrefined" people can have great hearts and can be clever. She also loses all her money with the exception of 13 pounds a year. This leaves her with not enough for rent and food.
