In West LA, I like the Literati Cafe with its high ceilings and comfy environment.
In the valley, I rely on the Starbucks on Victory and Coldwater Canyon. It's a big place and you can always find a place to sit there.
In West Hollywood, there's always the fun Java Detour on the corner of Santa Monica and Robertson. It's relatively small but the people are friendly.
The roof patio at the Getty Center's West Pavilion is also very peaceful on a weekday afternoon.
