Eric Greenfield Imajica and Weaveworld are at the top of the genre. He hasn't produced much these days but he was in his prime with those two very frightening books. Check them out!

I'm a big fan of Barker. IMO The Great And Secret show is among his best.

Andrea | 3 comments I just got The Great and Secret Show, I'm excited about it. I've read Books of Blood but its been a while. Always been a huge fan of his movies. I was all about the older Hellraiser movies when I was younger.

The Great and Secret Show is a strange but great read. Barker's vision is unique to say the least.

My first Barker read was The Great and Secret Show while I was in high school and I was sure that he had to be on some serious mind-altering drugs to be able to come up with this storyline. After reading all of the Books of Blood series, I was convinced that he was pure genius. Unfortunately, I've heard mixed reviews of The Scarlet Gospels.

D20 | 173 comments I have The Great and Secret Show sitting on my bookshelf, waiting to be read. Weirdly I still haven't read Barker, though Nightbreed is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I would start with his Books of Blood series. Lean, mean and full of sharp teeth. As much as I love The Great and Secret Show, you have to be ready for a long and intricate head trip into one F#*%d up fantasy

Mary (maryjane70) | 6 comments I have been a fan of Clive Barker for a long time. Loved The Great and Secret Show (probably my fav), Coldheart Canyon, Weaveworld,,,
I read the Scarlet Gospels and I didn't find it wonderful. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't as good as I was expecting. Would love to hear what others think.

D20 | 173 comments I also have Imajika. Do others agree with Eric that it's a good one? I have Books of Blood wishlisted but I wanted to read the ones I have before investing further.

message 14: by Mary (new)

Mary (maryjane70) | 6 comments I liked Imajika too.

message 15: by D20 (new)

D20 | 173 comments So maybe I should read Imajika first, then Secret Show. I'm finishing off something else at the moment and wondering what the group read will be, but I may get to this soon.

I finished Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell Sherlock Holmes and the Servants of Hell by Paul Kane by Paul Kane. At first glance, the premise sounds funny. But I'm telling ya, it was really good. The marriage of Sherlock Holmes and Clive Barker's Hellraiser works better than you can imagine.

Holly | 2 comments I have Imajica and his autobiography and am interested in doing a couple of buddy reads. Anyone care to join me?

I have Imajica. When did you have in mind?

Erin *Proud Book Hoarder* (erinpaperbackstash) I'm reading Imajica right now, have had it on the TBR shelf forever. So far it's pretty good. Hasn't addicted me yet so it's kind of slow going, but I'm that way with most fantasy novels.

I read some of his Books of Blood and love them - plan to re-read a few to properly review them. I remember Damnation Game as being very good, but was disappointed with the Hellbound Heart when I read it in my twenties. There was something too detached about the writing style for my taste.
I like how Barker seems to cater his writing style to the work - you can easily see he has wide range when you read a few of his short stories back to back.

Lena I've only read a short story but it stuck. Something about hands coming alive and freeing one another by forcing the person to cut one off. Then they ran around like a bloody vicious version of Thing from Addams family. Unforgettable. Need to winnow my TBR before it falls on me then I'll add some Clive Barker. Plus I was always a Pin Head fan!
