I once read the master of horror himself, Stephen King, say that he always slept with the light on. Is there a book you have read that made you afraid to turn off the lights before crawling into bed?

haha, I used to always sleep with the hall light on as a child... The Shining always gets me.

Hi Kirstin. Yes it's a great book and thought of by many as the best ever in this genre.

As I said in the other thread, books normally don't scare me, but I do remember reading Stephen King's IT in my teens and that made quite an impression!

I have some issues with the book, and don't think it's King's best, but I might say that it's his most frightening. Pennywise made me avoid drains for years! Ironically, though, it was a lot of the background and side stories in that book that had the feel of a real incident and were just so disturbing. Undoubtedly one of the most effective horror novels I've read.

Yes he did capture that real scare element in the book. I think it's safe to say the movie did too. Pennywise was one scary dude.

I, too,always slept with at least a nightlight on, so I sympathize, empathize, and have compassion with Mr. King. Which makes my book choice ironic: It is the story that freaked me out...that and The Shining. I had to check under the beds and in the closets for awhile after those.

...but frankly my real-life experiences have taught me never to climb into bed in the dark. *Always* lift up the sheet --in the light--to see what you're about to get in with. Trust me on that.
