Sound of breaking waves:
A spray of sea water shoot’s
Through the reef’s blowhole.

FOUR KIGO HAIKU
Fall leaves from blazing
sun drifting down to white ground
await spring budding.

Thank you for starting this group!
in the spirit, but maybe not the exact form of Haiku, a few offerings of mine:
Green gold on the mango-tree
sun on leaves
Sweeter than fruit
On the forest floor
Dead leaves crackle:
The sound of sunlight.
Something this way comes.
Something this way comes.
Aaah, my shadow approaches me.
The rain cuts the earth
Lines on an old woman's face.
A leaf spirals down
A wasp hums up
Balance.
somewhere,
pythons coil
their strength in deep forests
the listening flower
cocks a purple ear
to the sound of bees
No maybe not exactly haiku, but good and some of them remind me of the Japanese translations of old haiku

and i love the imagery of knobby fingers sorting memories as life comes closer to a close, beautiful

My friend Art offered a suggestion which I think not only puts the 5-7-5 back in order, but improves the verse as well!
blinking sleepy eyes
the turtle watches the pond
from the fallen tree
blinking sleepy eyes
the turtle watches the pond
from the fallen tree
Otherwise there is the slightest chance one would mistakenly think the pond instead of the turtle was on the fallen tree

I really enjoyed the images in both your and your mentor's haiku, but I especially liked the way the two poems compliment one another. It reminded me of Jim Harrison and Ted Kooser's poetry collection "Braided Creek: A Conversation in Poetry." They sent each other postcards back and forth and then put out a collection. Sometimes, the best books are the collaborative ones.
Braided Creek
The moon in the sky
is a balloon tethered
to a child dreaming.
I like cleverness and sentiment in haiku.

cat - one
Silent star." Jack Kerouac

Here is one of his and one of mine:
his:
Only wire grass grows
Where last winter orchids bloomed,-
Wind stirs the pines’ limbs.
mine:
Brown lizard floating
Waits its time on pool toy
Til lunch or escape
