Mary Roach, recently interviewed by Goodreads, has a new non-fiction book out this week, available for hold at CCLD’s Central Library--Gulp: Adventures on the Alimentary Canal. Also, keep an eye out for her previous books (Packing for Mars, Bonk, Spook, Stiff), all available for checkout.

Phyllis | 2 comments Who ever thought reading about corpses would be fun. But Mary Roach when writing STIFF tells lots of stuff you never thought about before and makes it laugh out loud funny.

I have heard great things about Stiff! I will have to check that out, along with her new book.

I LOVE Mary Roach. I've read everything I can get my hands on by her. :) Can't wait to read Gulp. Spooked is her book about the search to prove the soul exists. She even went on a weekend retreat to see folks learn how to be a medium (or mediums)? :) Her last one was about going into space. A whole chapter on going to the bathroom in space & the challenges thereof!!! :) :) Hilarious and fascinating!

Am now reading Gulp (Mary Roach) and am laughing my head off. Chapter 2 (?) is on making palatable food for our pets. Mary Roach tasted the solution they use to flavor cat food; it tasted "other"....she couldn't define it. Cats taste things in ways we can't & vice versa. They can't detect sugar.

Also, one scientist can make his python eat anything if he puts a rat head on it. " (the python) will eat a beer bottle if I put a rat head on it!" (Pythons don't have taste buds, so they use visual clues (?) about what to eat. :)

Haha, those are some interesting facts, Doris Jean! I don't read a lot of non-fiction but think I am definitely going to check out some Mary Roach. Phyllis and one of the genealogy volunteers have told me a bit about her books and they sound great. I remember reading a lot about Packing For Mars when that first came out and think I actually had it checked out at one point but never got a chance to read it. I need to start whittling down my to-read list this summer!

Gina Beirne (ginabeirne) I love Mary Roach. Non-fiction that is interesting and educational. I can always astound my husband with facts from her books. LOL.

I finished Gulp after staying up late, roaring w/ laughter about the chapter on ....gas. :) Apparently, everyone's er, ...emissions, are unique, like fingerprints. "But you can't dust for them." Mary says! :) :)
