The Year It Rained A Novel by Crescent Dragonwagon, pub. 1985.Summary: Having survived three suicide attempts and treatment in a series of mental hospitals, seventeen-year-old Elizabeth continues to fight for happiness in a life filled with confusion and turbulence.
No, that is not the one, but thanks for trying, April Ann. The girl only attempts suicide once. She completes therapy in the hospital and gets better once she is able to tell her story. She leaves behind some strange characters she made friends with when she was an inpatient. There were days when her Mother and step-Father visited and took part in a type of group therapy at the hospital, but the hard part for the young teen girl (15 or 16 years old?) is that her parents don't believe her story. They both think she is either making up the story for attention or jealousy of her step-brother or that she really is mentally ill.
After some time and a bit of odd behavior by her previously beloved step-son, her Mother starts to see that she should side with her daughter even though it begins to destroy her perfect marriage.
The girl's step-Father sides with his son of course.
Finally, the girl moves home with her Mother in a small place she rents after separating with her husband in order to help the daughter get her life back.
She refuses to see her step-brother who attends an elite prep-school and has a girlfriend.
Throughout most of the book, the reader is not sure which teen is lying and both sides sound convincing. Doctors at the hospital have said that the girl's story rings true, but how can she possibly prove it?
The best I can guess is that we listened to it a two or three years ago. Possibly 4 years ago on the outside? It sounded contemporary (as I think laptop computers were mentioned!)
This is a tough one. Nearly have been hitting my head on the wall over this one!
Is it An Act of Love by Nancy Thayer? I did the audio of this one too I think but I don't remember it being YA. Maybe my library just didn't categorize it the same way.

Thank you, Thank you Joanie! You solved the mystery! It is: "An Act of Love" by Nancy Thayer I guess that it was not a YA book after all. It just seemed like one.
This group is amazing at solving book titles.
Much appreciation,
Gwen

The step brother convincingly denies all saying the she(his step sister) in fact always had a crush on him, and an old journal entry is used as evidence.
This is a psychological thriller where the reader does not learn the truth until near the end of the book.
Can anyone help me figure this one out?
Thanks for trying.
PS I believe it was written by a female author.
