Kate (kaitlins16) I love challenges, and I would like to do more challenges in this group than just the monthly Themed Challenge. So, if you have any awesome ideas for weekly, monthly, or all-year-long challenges, please post them here (and I do mean please. My low level creativity only goes so far, and I can't come up with much without input from you).

Right now, I have two ideas I would like to put through.

1) A 2013 book count where we all just post the books that we have read in 2013 and see how many total books the group can read in the year.

2) A weekly pick-it-for me challenge where you sign up every week and post a small list of books that you would like to read. I would assign you a random partner, and your partner would pick which book he or she wants you to read during the week. You would have the rest of the week to read the book, and then you would post a review for it.

These challenges are just for fun, not competitions.

I plan to start threads for these soon, but I would like some more ideas from all of you, or maybe some suggestions to improve the two challenges mentioned above.

Destany | 122 comments We could do something like a book scavenger hunt

message 3: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Okay. What do you have in mind?

message 4: by Destany (new)

Destany | 122 comments We could either pick a series and find certain things in those books or like have a few objects and have to find as many books as we can in a time limit that has those objects in them

message 5: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I like that idea. There would be like a weekly object to go in search for.

message 6: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Maybe to build off the Scavenger hunt idea, we could have different teams (number depends on how many people would like to participate) that compete for fun to find the most number of books with the given item in it.

Kate (kaitlins16) Hannelore said this as part of her comment for the ebook giveaway:

"Well, to be honest, I had to think a long time before I found something but maybe you could ask everybody of the group to choose one book and rate it, tell something about the characters and by the end of the month, people can choose which book seems the most interesting and then do a buddy read of it?"

Thank you so much for the suggestion. I love to see you members coming up with ideas.

I would really like to do this sometime (maybe we can set this up so it will start in May). I also want to do the scavenger hunt idea given by Destany.

However, to do these ideas, I will need help. So, if anybody wants to work with me to put Destany and Hannelore's ideas into action, please let me know. It would be very helpful.

Kate (kaitlins16) I also have a bunch of ideas I want to get started when I get out of school in June. A lot of it has to do with stuff I really want to do, but I will open the challenges for other people to take part in too.

Leigh (leighsalv) -Hmm what about Rainbow Book Challenge? Where you have to read a book that has a rainbow color in its cover, and that can last up to a month. I was thinking since there are 7 colors in a rainbow, you could read 2 books in a week. For example, during the first week you can read a book that has a red cover and another book that has a purple cover.

-Camp YABookaholics
This could be like a special challenge that only happens during summer and winter. It's where we create a new shelf on our goodreads shelf just for this challenge, listing our top 14 ya books that we want to read. Then once we have enough people, we can assign people partners. Let's say Bella & Edward are partners. Bella will choose 7 books from Edward's shelf and he has to read it within the month. Edward will choose 7 books from Bella's shelf too. If you want we could change the quantity of books to read.

message 10: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I like both of those ideas. :)

I have a summer challenge being set up right now. Maybe the Camp YA Bookaholics could be part of that.

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) a all around the world themed challenge

message 12: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I'll just repeat what I said in the other thread.

What details of that do you have in mind?

message 13: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) @Kaitlin: sounds good! :) what month do you think we should start it?

@Jackie: Oooh I like the all around the world themed challenge! Is it like based off of the book's setting? Like book 1 takes place in Japan, book 2 in Canada... like that?

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) Have members pair up into groups of 2 or more, and have each person come up with a book where the character travels to there home town or country

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) ooooo that sounds even better!

message 16: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) I like yours too! We should combine it :)

message 17: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) Like one group travels to Europe, one to Asia, one to North America, one to South America, another to Australia etc. Meaning, one group should read a book that takes place in Europe and so on..

Jackie - Fire & Ice Book Reviews (jackiefireicebookreviews) i know sounds good! :D

message 19: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Maybe that could be part of Summer Challenges. The challenges could be just a series of a bunch of different two week reading challenges. Each one would have a different focus to it, like Around the World or just a general pick and choose books.

I'm trying to figure out a way to make all these ideas fit together and not overlap so much that there are several reading challenges at once. (This is why I posted my summer challenge ideas at least a month ahead. It allows for brainstorming.)

message 21: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Challenge Brainstorming So Far

**Summer Challenge - series of reading challenges where partners either pick a list of books for the other to read and/or the two work together to read books of a certain topic.

**Camp YA Bookaholic - partners choose a series of books for the other to read during the month. *Maybe we can combine this with the series of challenges for the summer one, but keep this name. The time would be shorter, and it would have a series of smaller themes.

Themes/Topics for both of the previous challenges:

-Around the World (which we will definitely do)
-Supernatural Showdown? (Team challenge where each team gets a different creature)
(I have some smaller themes that I personally want to do, but I could just work them into the other themes we choose instead.)
-Reread and Review? (Read books again to post a review for it)
-Keeping it Real? (All contemporary)

**Rainbow Challenge - Will probably be separate from the above challenges, unless we want to incorporate it somehow.

message 22: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I just drafted a tentative schedule (without actual dates) of the challenges (that would start the second week of June and end sometime early September):

General
Special (Around the world)
General
Special (the creature showdown)
General
Special

Each one would last two weeks
*Special: a fun specific theme with a specific list (number, places) that members challenge themselves to finish. It's a lot more structured than a general one. It would be great to have one or two leaders for each of these ones.
*General: no set number or theme. There will be a suggested theme and book amount, but members may choose different ones. (It's a lot like just a regular pick it for me challenge.)

That way, I can fit in my original summer challenge plan with the ones that have been suggested.

We can also fit in some side challenges too, but this is for the summer/camp ya bookaholic challenge.

message 23: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Would anyone like to help organize the three special reading challenges?

I'm going to go ahead and do the general ones (which is what my original summer plan was).

message 24: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) I can help :) ! Which challenge should we do first? Also, I came up with another challenge idea. I dont have a name for it yet but it's a month long challenge where members will be challenged to read 3 ya contemporary books, 3 paranormal, 3 fantasy, 3 dystopian, and 3 sci fi books.

message 25: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) I thought of another one. Let's do the 2,000 pgs month challenge where we have to read at 2,000 pages or more. I think it'll challenge others to read more than their usual read.

message 26: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) The first reading challenge ends on the June 15, so maybe a special reading one can take place after that point?

message 27: by xxx (new)

xxx luxie | 9 comments I have an idea! what about the alphabet challenge. where u read a book by the authors name. like u go from a-z try to get through the whole alphabet in a certain amount of time.

message 28: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Shrishti~Music~Psyche wrote: "How about a You Pick Me A Book challenge?"

That's similar to the challenge I've got going now, but I guess sometime we could do something similar to what Jenny does on the other group (pick one book from the entire to-read list to read for the month).

Kate (kaitlins16) Miranda wrote: "I have an idea! what about the alphabet challenge. where u read a book by the authors name. like u go from a-z try to get through the whole alphabet in a certain amount of time."

I've seen challenges like these all over goodreads! Maybe we could make it a year-long challenge (or, at least one for the rest of the year). That way, you guys can have a lot of time to get the books read.

message 30: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Since we have so many ideas for challenges, how about we compile a list of different challenge ideas and then host a poll or create a thread asking people what ideas they like the best?

message 31: by Kate (last edited May 28, 2013 10:46PM) (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Actually . . . I have a suggestion. (I'm thinking of Leigh's 3 books of each genre idea.) I thought of this awhile back, but I just never made a post about it.

This could be a yearly challenge, and it's similar to the A-Z challenges, except it wouldn't go by letters. Instead, it would go by genres, themes, or different objects/elements found in books. It could be a mixed bag of books. It would add a little variety to some people's reading.

So a basic example would be to read

-one contemporary book
-one dystopia book
-one paranormal book
-one book set in your home country
-one book where people travel to a different country
-one book where the protagonist is a supernatural being
-one book where a human falls in love with a supernatural being
-one book with a special weapon or enchanted item
. . . and so on.

Any book from the entire year would count towards the challenge.

Kate (kaitlins16) Shrishti~Music~Psyche wrote: "Good idea. I think a poll will be more organized and stuff. people can also add their challenge option there. I can really do with a Mini challenge. I already have so many long ones, like the Banne..."

I'll try to put through more small challenges. I'm trying to implement a bunch of different ideas into a smaller number of challenges so there isn't to many.

Mini challenges are a good way to help complete the larger challenges.

message 33: by Leigh (new)

Leigh (leighsalv) Oooh nice ideas guys!! A poll is good too or we could just have a challenge every month since all these challenge ideas are great :) . I think we have more than 12 challenges already so we're good for the year!

message 34: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) I'm going to compile a list of different challenge ideas and post it here.

message 35: by Kate (last edited Jun 03, 2013 04:43PM) (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) Here is a list of possible monthly challenges

-Rainbow covers
-Around the World
-Supernatural Showdown
-Keeping it Real (contemporary)
-2,000 pages
-Three Books Each (read three books of each genre given)

Does anybody else have any ideas? I'm thinking that we can narrow down challenges/themes so that we can make one of these the Themed Challenge for July.

message 36: by Kate (new)

Kate (kaitlins16) It depends on what format the challenge is in.
