Mystery/Thriller Reading Friends discussion

So I just learned a neat thing about shelves. I was a little disgruntled when I created my Determination shelf to realize that when I moved Great Expectations from my Currently Reading list to Determination it made a copy, it didn't move it.
I was browsing through the feedback group folder and found out that you can "edit" shelves to make them exclusive, so that the entries aren't duplicated.
Of course now that I've found this out, and am explaining it, I'm wondering why I wouldn't want the book on my DL to also appear on my Current list, if I am currently reading it.
Okay, I've tired myself out. I'm going to move on now.

That is funny. I noticed that too, I have been figuring out different things about the bookshelves over the last few weeks. I think I can explain this clearly (I hope) Most of you have probably already figured this out. When you add books to your TBR shelf, you are also linked to everyone else's TBR shelf too (and not just your friends)

Oh, this is interesting on two counts, Wonderfriend. (I'm trademarking the use of "Wonderfriend" for Goodreads, btw.) First, though I'd seen the duplications on some people's shelves, I'd assumed they wanted them that way, not that Goodreads did it. Then, once you'd told me there was a problem, you solved it within the same post. That's what makes you wonderful, Wonderfriend!

First of all, you can not declare "first dibs" on Wonderfriend in the Goodreads world any more than you can declare yourself the author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Nice try, though.

Ah, To Kill A Mockingbird.....I remember this from when I first started posting on the M/T board. And I have a feeling there is going to be a cat fight soon! LOL

I didn't even think it do a DL shelve. I put 1/2 of the books that I have on DL on the to be read shelve. But I guess I can move it and create one then move them to read as I finished them. It would be easier that way whoever can see the ones I still have on the shelve.

Why wouldn't the to read shelf be the same thing as a determination list?

Not for me, Cathy. My TBR is around 160 books that I own and which are waiting to be read. My Determination List is 17 specially chosen books that I'm determined to read in 2009. It's a kind of bookish New Year's resolution.

A DL list is something we been doing or some of us what was the m/t board and book nook. I have probably if not over 2000 to be read books. So I pick 17 (because Ms. O'Cat requests it of books that I own that either has been around forever (on my bookcase) or that I've been meaning to read. I don't think I've been able to read all 17 or I believe for a few years I had other numbers. I came close one year. But this year I think I'll be able to do it. (she says after only having read 3 of this year's books so far really it's too much like homework when you make a list and say you are going to do it)I have a few of the books from last year that I didn't get too or get rid of and I added a few new ones. I really want to finish the older ones first but the new ones keep calling me. A few of us might even have the same books on the list and we might end up reading them at the same time so it makes it easier.

I would like to announce that taking drugs is absolutely not necessary when grouping your books in lovely stacks of 17. Whatever Lori has done that gives her flashbacks is not sanctioned by The World of O'Cat.

This is driving me crazy. I read what you told me, about how to add books to the book shelves, but now I can't find your posts again on it. I did add one book, but when I tried to add Run for your life, by James Patterson, I couldn't add it. How do find the discussion again?

Amy, I just posted on another thread that the easiest way to add books is to access a friend's list and click on the stars to rate the books you've read.

This doesn't allow you to add reviews or a lot of information (like the date you finished it). It does allow you to build your "read" list. I'm doing it this way and I guess I plan to go back and add the other stuff later if I want to.

You do this by going to "friends" in the bar across the top. Scroll down your list of friends and pick one with whom you think you'll have a lot of books in common. Click on the little number that says how many are in their lists.

Other than that, I can't remember how to add things from the very beginning. I'm going to have to look around and come back and add another post.

Hmmm. Amy, I can't see the reply I just made to your post. I hope it shows up for you. Since I've posted twice already on that topic today, I don't want to clutter up the board by doing it again. Email me if you don't see it.

Anyway, to add books to your shelves,
Go to the top of the screen where it says "Hi, Amy"
and click.
Click My Profile
Just under the information box you'll see a horizontal list of your shelves. "Read," "Currently reading," and "To Be Read" will be there for you already. They're default shelves.
Click on the one you want to add to.
Somewhere on that screen--whenever I'm trying to document the steps to something, I get fuzzy after the 4th or 5th step. Sorry--it will say something like "add to this shelf" or "more on currently reading." It IS fairly obvious once you get there.

Here are some more add to bookshelves tips. You can add the date you read a book you have rated previously. After highlighting the stars it adds the book to your Read shelf automatically. Right under the message that you have 'added to my books', Goodreads adds a link 'add my review'. If you click to add your review and then scroll down the page a bit, the boxes for selecting the date read, number of times read and recommend to appear and you can save that info with the Save button at the bottom of the page -- the save button is an important step when you are on the review page. You may add a review to a book you rated later too. Good Luck!

Amy: Another tip for finding a post. *if you remember who posted it but don't remember which thread it was on, -- Click on the friends name and it will take you to a list of their recent activity including recent updates (posts).

If it's not in this discussion topic, then your best bet is to do a search. The trick is you have to remember some unique keywords so that your search doesn't net you a trillion posts. So searching for "add" probably wouldn't be great,especially since all the recent activity about adding friends, books, etc. But I just read Ann's tips about clicking on the friend and looking at their recent posts, I think that's probably even better in this case since you remember it was me. If I get a chance I'll look myself!

Jan, you are a bad, bad kitty. I went to my friends list to see how this worked, and I had to tear myself away as it was SO easy to add books this way!

I just added a couple of books to my bookshelf. I wrote a comment on one. I'm curious. Did my comment come up on anybody's email?
